Alex Dixon powers Riverhounds to 1st win of season
Alex Dixon had a goal and a highlight-reel assist to help the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to a 3-0 victory over New York Red Bulls II Friday night in Montclair, N.J. It was the first win of the season for the Riverhounds (1-2-1).
Dixon and Danny Griffin scored seven minutes apart as the Riverhounds took control in the first half.
Griffin volleyed in a left-footed Albert Dikwa cross from the corner in the 22nd minute. In the 29th minute, Dani Rovira stepped in front of an errant clearing attempt and hit Dixon making a run into the box. He slipped a shot inside the back post for his first goal with the Riverhounds.
Dixon’s notable assist came in the 50th minute. He flicked a no-look, back-heel pass to Russell Cicerone on the right side of the box to make it 3-0.
Danny Vitiello made four saves to shut out New York (1-3-2) and give coach Bob Lilley his 50th Riverhounds victory.
Pittsburgh will visit Loudoun United at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
