Apollo-Ridge graduate Duane Brown, a junior on the IUP football team, earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his performance in a win over Clarion on Oct. 9, 2021.

Duane Brown was a double-edged sword that cut through the Clarion football team Saturday.

The IUP junior punt returner and receiver from Apollo-Ridge earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Special Teams Athlete of the Week honors after totaling 75 yards on three punt returns in a 58-21 victory over the Eagles.

He had a return of 62 yards — a career-best — in the second quarter that helped set up his own 14-yard receiving touchdown that extended IUP’s lead to 30-7.

Brown also had a return of 14 yards in the second quarter.

He finished the game with 212 total yards on nine touches, including six catches for 137 yards. The all-purpose yardage total was the most by an IUP player since 2017.

For the season, Brown has 27 receptions for 411 yards and three scores. He owns a trio of 100-yard receiving efforts.

Washington & Jefferson: Alex Bellinotti (Lower Burrell/Shady Side Academy) continued his strong junior season for Washington & Jefferson with four tackles, including a sack, in Saturday’s victory over Saint Vincent . For the season, Bellinotti has 26 tackles, six of them for a loss, as the Presidents have jumped out to a 6-0 record overall and a 5-0 mark in conference play.

Grove City: Sophomore wide receiver Scoot Fraser (Knoch) caught four passes for 49 yards and his second touchdown of the season in the Wolverines’ 56-7 Presidents Athletic Conference victory over Geneva on Saturday. Grove City now is 5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Fraser is up to 422 receiving yards on 32 receptions through the six games.

Edinboro: Apollo-Ridge graduate Jake Nulph picked up his first victory as coach of the Fighting Scots with Saturday’s 17-7 PSAC triumph over Seton Hill.

Nulph was named the new Edinboro coach in January 2020, but the covid pandemic caused last season to be canceled. Against the Griffins, the Fighting Scots used special teams kick blocks, a stingy defensive effort and 111 passing and 118 rushing yards to secure the win. Edinboro now is 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

Freshman Reed Martin (Plum) is handling both the kickoffs and punts. Against Seton Hill on Saturday, he kicked off four times for a 62.8-yard average, and three went for touchbacks. Martin also was busy with six punts. His long was 38 yards.

Women’s soccer

Eastern Kentucky: Lucy Ream (Fox Chapel), a freshman forward, scored her second collegiate goal Sunday in a 2-1 victory over Lipscomb. Ream has started every game this season for the Colonels, who are 7-7 overall and 3-3 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

Ream’s first goal and first assist came in a 3-1 win at Northern Illinois on Aug. 29. She has three assists overall, giving her seven points, good for a tie for third on the team and just one point from the team leaders.

Westminster: Graduate student and defender Jocelyn Gillette (Highlands) added to her standout collegiate career with her first goal of the season Saturday in a PAC victory over Thiel. It was the second game with points recorded as she assisted on a goal in a 7-0 triumph over Bethany three days earlier.

The lockdown defender, a member of Westminster’s all-decade women’s soccer team (2010-19) owns career marks of five goals and seven assists.

Men’s soccer

Allegheny: Nick Taliani, a senior forward from Springdale, scored his third goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference loss to Wabash (Ind.) College. His first two goals came in a pair of 3-2 victories over Waynesburg and Marietta. Taliani owns seven career goals in three seasons in a Gators uniform.

Women’s lacrosse

Grove City: Freshman Britta Lagerquist (Fox Chapel) assisted on a goal in the Wolverines’ 5-1 PAC victory over Geneva on Friday. Lagerquist picked up her first two collegiate points with a goal in a 2-0 Grove City win at Mt. Aloysius on Sept. 27. She has started the past nine games for the Wolverines, who are 6-6 overall and 3-1 in PAC play.

Men’s tennis

Waynesburg: Adam Huckstein, a sophomore from Knoch, scored a 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 triumph at No. 6 singles to help lead the Yellow Jackets to a 6-3 win over Geneva on Oct. 5. Waynesburg concluded its fall season at 2-2. Huckstein also won at No. 3 doubles Sept. 11 against Penn State-Altoona as he and Plum grad Justin North teamed to score an 8-2 victory.

Men’s golf

Cal (Pa.): Cole Villa (Leechburg) finished 56th out of 93 competitors at the Kyle Ryman Memorial, hosted by Tiffin.

He carded a 79 over the first 18 holes of the three-round event but was one of the leaders over the final two rounds with scores of 73 and 74 to finish with a 10-over 226. He recorded four birdies in the second around before tallying birdies on back-to-back holes on the back nine in the final round.
