Alle-Kiski Valley Campus Clippings: Myers nets career-high 23 points

Tess Myers has made quite the impact for the Duquesne women’s basketball team.

The latest evidence from the Dukes freshman guard, Lower Burrell resident and North Catholic graduate came Saturday against St. Francis (Pa.) in a nonconference game at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Myers scored a career-best 23 points (6 of 13 shooting, 4 of 7 from 3-point range) in the 70-61 win.

All of her points came in the second half. She scored 12 of her team’s 17 points in the third quarter and half of Duquesne’s 22 fourth-quarter points.

Myers is averaging 11.6 points through 11 games, all starts. She leads the team with 31 3-pointers and is 19 of 22 (86.4 percent) from the free-throw line.

Allegheny: Jenna Manke (Freeport) is averaging 6.5 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Gators in 11 games, all starts, in and out of North Coast Athletic Conference play. She tallied a season-best 10 points against Franciscan on Nov. 20 and pulled down a season-high eight rebounds against Geneva three days earlier. 

Wrestling

Bucknell: Junior Darren Miller (Kiski Area) is 6-0 at 141 pounds. The team captain is 3-0 in dual matches, and four of his six wins have come by major decision. Miller went 3-0 — he didn’t compete in the finals — and took runner-up at the Navy Classic on Nov. 20.The victories up his career record to 33-19.

Indoor track and field

Allegheny: Adam Cook (Fox Chapel) took second in the 3,000-meter run at the season-opening Case Western Reserve Holiday Classic on Dec. 4. He finished his race in a time of 9 minutes 27.40 seconds.

He added a seventh in the mile (4:40.12).

Cal (Pa.): Senior Jalen Cloud (Kiski Area) placed second in the triple jump (13.83 meters/45 feet, 4 1/2 inches) at the Youngstown State Ice Breaker on Dec. 3. His best jump came on his first attempt, and it qualified him for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.

Washington & Jefferson: Faith Remich (Burrell) ran a career-best time of 20:11.50 to place 13th overall in the 5,000 meters at the Youngstown State Ice Breaker.

The event featured several Division I and II schools.

Men’s swimming

Gannon: Justin DeCheck (Plum) picked up five PSAC-championship qualifying marks at the Magnus Cup meet at Cleveland State. He punched his ticket in the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.50), 50 freestyle (21.59), 100 butterfly (49.97), 100 backstroke (54.27) and 200 back (1:55.92). Joey Decheck (Plum) qualified in four events: 50 free (20.91), 100 fly (51.4), 200 free (1:46.42) and 100 free (46.44).

Women’s swimming

Cal (Pa.): Freshman Madison Moretti (Freeport) reached the PSAC-qualifying standard in the 500 free with a time of 5:23.66 at the Magnus Cup.

Football

Slippery Rock: One of eight national finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award, which recognizes the top lineman in Division II, Chad Kuhn (Kiski Area) was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-Region team in Super Region One. He finished his senior season with 9 sacks, 11 tackles for loss and a career-high four forced fumbles to go with 52 total tackles. His 29 career sacks rank third all-time at SRU.

Rock offensive tackle Jake Tecak (Plum) was named to the team for the first time.

He started nearly every game of the last two seasons at the right tackle position. This fall, SRU averaged 478.5 yards of total offense per game, including 345.3 passing yards per game.

Robert Morris: Fifth-year kicker Nick Bisceglia earned Big South Special Teams Player of the Week Honors Nov. 22. In the season finale against Campbell on Nov. 20, Bisceglia connected on a 25-yard field goal in overtime to give the Colonials at 20-17 victory. He added a 41 yarder in the first quarter. Bisceglia’s 51 points led RMU for the 2021 season.
