Allen Robinson runs out of slot at 1st Steelers OTAs, but ‘taking it slowly’ in return from injury

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Allen Robinson II goes through drills during an organized team activities session Wednesday at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Allen Robinson II has begun his on-field practice tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers running mostly out of the slot – when he’s been running at all.

Still in the latter stages of recovery from foot surgery undergone in November, Robinson said he has not been a full participant while taking part in organized team activities. But the veteran wide receiver insisted he will be full-go for training camp.

“I have been limited just coming off my injury from last season,” Robinson said Thursday after the third OTA session ended this week’s work schedule for the Steelers. “Just kind of still progressing through that, taking that slowly and making sure I am ready and good to go as we kind of move forward. I have been getting out there – but I am still limited right now.”

Robinson suffered a stress fracture while playing for the Los Angeles Rams last season. He was acquired by the Steelers via a trade last month in the hopes he could fill a role as the third wide receiver option behind Diontae Johnson and George Pickens.

The simplest way of complementing those two would be by playing in the slot – an area by which Robinson said he has played roughly 40% of the time (Pro Football Focus data suggests that’s been close to the case over the past five seasons).

In the limited action during practice he has had so far with the Steelers, Robinson said he has tended to be on the inside.

“I would say definitely starting off in the slot,” he said, “but being able to play everywhere. That’s something that I have been able to do throughout the course of my career. Coming into this offense, ‘OK, where’s my presence needed, and what is being needed of me?’ And that’s how I am coming in (to the Steelers).”
