One day after general manager Omar Khan said the Pittsburgh Steelers were finalizing a contract extension with veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky, the deal became official.

Trubisky and the Steelers agreed to a three-year contract that runs through the 2025 season, the team announced Friday.

Trubisky, 28, was scheduled to become a free agent after the upcoming season. The contract extension lessens the salary cap hit for Trubisky, who was scheduled to count $10.625 million against the cap in 2023 with an $8 million base salary.

NFL Network reported the contract as being worth $19.4 million, with Trubisky being eligible to make $33 million over the life of the deal based on incentives.

Tying up Trubisky long term not only provides the Steelers some cap breathing room this season, it gives them a long-term backup to second-year starter Kenny Pickett. The Steelers also re-signed Mason Rudolph to a one-year contract, giving them three quarterbacks with at least 10 games of NFL experience on their roster.

Trubisky started five games and appeared in two others in 2022, his first season with the Steelers. He completed 65% of his passes for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns, five interceptions and an 81.1 rating. He had a 94.46 rating in the three games he played in relief of Pickett.

Trubisky has a 31-24 career record as a starter, and his .564 winning percentage is ninth-highest among active quarterbacks who have made at least 50 starts.
