Over the offseason, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler re-acquired some old duties as part of his job description.

Butler was the Steelers’ linebackers coach for 12 seasons before being promoted to coordinator in early 2015. Management filled his old position then by splitting it into two jobs: Joey Porter was named outside linebackers coach and Jerry Olsavsky the inside linebackers coach.

When Porter was let go after last season, his position-coach duties were absorbed by Butler. Butler said this week from minicamp that not much will change.

“Joey did a good job of coaching them. He played under me, so he taught the same thing I taught,” Butler said.

“All of us have our pet peeves, and they are different for different coaches. That’s going to be the difference for me coaching the outside guys than the way they’ve been coached last 2-3 years. I’m more concerned about different things and it’s from a perspective of how you’ve played and how you’ve coached through the years.”

The two starters at outside linebacker are former first-round picks in Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt. The top backup is Anthony Chickillo, fresh off a contract extension. After that is plenty of youth and inexperience.
