Belle Vernon native Joe Rudolph joins football staff at Virginia Tech

Veteran college football assistant coach Joe Rudolph, a Belle Vernon native, is leaving Wisconsin to join the staff at Virginia Tech.

Rudolph, a former offensive coordinator at Pitt, had two stints at Wisconsin and also coached at Nebraska. He will serve as the Hokies’ run game coordinator and offensive line coach.

The associate head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Wisconsin for the last seven seasons, “Coach Rudy” worked under former Pitt head coach Paul Chryst.

He coached tight ends at Nebraska, Wisconsin and Pitt after serving as strength coordinator at Ohio State in 2006.

Bowl games on his resume include the Alamo, Fiesta, Rose, Cotton and Orange, and he went to the BCS National Championship with Ohio State in ‘07.

Rudolph was a standout lineman at Wisconsin after his high school career at Belle Vernon. With the Badgers, he played for coach Barry Alvarez and won a Big Ten title in 1993 and played on a winning Rose Bowl team in ‘94.

Rudolph played two seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles (1995) and San Francisco 49ers (‘97).

He earned his master’s degree in business administration from Carnegie Mellon.
