If Pittsburgh hasn’t yet caught “Duck” fever, perhaps the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback has.

Devlin “Duck” Hodges has by far outperformed most of the No. 4 quarterbacks invited to Steelers training camp over the years. And with a nickname inspired by a national duck-calling championship win a decade ago, coupled with a strong NFL preseason debut last week, Hodges is on the verge of a mini-cult following among Steelers fans.

Ben Roethlisberger, apparently, is joining the ranks of Hodges fans.

“Duck is just slinging it — and it’s fun to watch,” Roethlisberger said Thursday after the conclusion of the final training-camp practice at Saint Vincent. “He’s kind of fearless out there.

“(A) young guy, small school, undrafted … it’s fun to see guys like that succeed.”

Hodges completed 8 of 14 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown pass over four series leading the offense in the second half of the Steelers’ 30-28 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend. Coach Mike Tomlin, who’s also been complimentary of Hodges’ work in camp, said the Steelers intend to get Hodges some playing time during Saturday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Heinz Field.

The career NCAA FCS record-holder for passing yards (14,584), Hodges has earned more camp practice reps than any Steelers fourth quarterback in recent memory.
