Campus clippings: Appleby's decorated career comes to close at IUP
Not many college basketball players can say they played in two Division II final fours and led their team to the No. 1 ranking in the nation.
But IUP senior Carolyn Appleby can say she’s done that — and much more.
Appleby had quite the career for the Crimson Hawks after leaving Greensburg Central Catholic.
The 5-foot-5 point guard was named an honorable mention All-American by Women’s Division II Bulletin after a memorable and highlight-filled final season.
Appleby, an All-Atlantic Region second-team selection, averaged 17.8 points and 3.2 assists as IUP went 30-4 and returned to the national semifinals. She was named PSAC Tournament MVP and made the Atlantic Region All-Tournament team, averaging 19.4 points across eight postseason games.
Appleby finished second on the IUP women’s scoring list with 1,723 points and 127 games played. She made more field goals this season (227) than any guard in program history.
Other career ranks: Third in field goals (623); fourth in assists (406); sixth in scoring average (13.6); seventh in 3-pointers made (168); and seventh in free throws (309).
She made the All-PSAC West first team twice, took home PSAC Tournament MVP twice, All-Region MVP in 2018, All-Elite Eight Tournament team in ‘18.
IUP finished this season ranked No. 4 in the nation in the WCBA coaches’ poll.
