Campus clippings: Franklin Regional, Norwin grads earn Presidents' Athletic Conference honors
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference hands out for awards at the end of each season. A pair of local players claimed two of them in men’s soccer.
Grove City junior Colton Hudson (Franklin Regional) was named the PAC defensive player of the year, while Saint Vincent freshman Daniel Maddock (Norwin) was tabbed newcomer of the year in the NCAA Division III conference.
Hudson also made the All-PAC first team, while Maddock joined two more local Grove City players, fifth-year defender Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) and junior Jake Kimmich (Franklin Regional) as all-conference picks.
Hudson and the Kimmich brothers made the first team, Maddock the second.
Saint Vincent senior defender Will LaBruno also made the second team.
Hudson has started 18 games and has a goal and assist for Grove City (15-2-2), which won the PAC and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Maddock had nine goals and five assists in his debut season for the Bearcats (11-4-5).
Reilly in portal
Bowling Green women’s soccer player Regan Reilly (Latrobe) announced she is entering the NCAA transfer portal after two seasons in Ohio.
A defender, she saw limited playing time this season as she appeared in four games after playing in 12 – with six starts – as a freshman.
Reilly has one assist in 16 career games.
Football
Bucknell: Senior defensive lineman Daniel Sierk (Hempfield) had four tackles and a QB hurry as the Bison fell to Holy Cross, 37-20.
Clarion: Redshirt freshman Ja’Tawn Williams (Latrobe) caught four receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown in a 42-34 loss to East Stroudsburg.
Grove City: Senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) posted a team-high nine tackles – his fourth game of nine or more stops — as the Wolverines crushed Hiram, 63-14.
The Wolverines (8-2) move on to the NCAA Division III playoffs. They will open against Hanover (8-2) on Saturday.
IUP: Redshirt sophomore Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) had seven receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown, but the Crimson Hawks (7-3) fell to Kutztown (11-0), 28-23, in the PSAC championship.
Washington & Jefferson: Junior Haden Sierocky (Ligonier Valley) and junior Dom Barca (Norwin) caught touchdown passes in a 67-0 win over Thiel.
The Presidents clinched their 28th PAC title with the victory.
Sierocky had a career-high four catches for 44 yards for the Presidents (8-2, 8-0 PAC).
Their passing scores were back-to-back in the fourth quarter, Sierocky on a 23-yard grab, Barca from 32 yards out.
Men’s basketball
Geneva: Sophomore forward Austin Matthews (Yough) scored 10 points off the bench, and starting junior guard Ryan Edwards (Norwin) had nine points on three 3-pointers, as Geneva cruised past Carlow, 82-68.
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats won 70-64 over Grove City as junior Matthew Marinchak (Ligonier Valley) poured in a season-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers.
Senior Trent Rozich added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, and seniors Jackson Byer and Michael Bigley scored 10 apiece.
The Bobcats moved to 3-0 with a 90-81 win over Allegheny as Marinchak hit seven 3s and tallied a game-high 28 points. Rozich added 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Marinchak’s early offensive tear earned him the AMCC player of the week.
Seton Hill: Redshirt sophomore Edir Ortiz had 26 points, and junior Kedrick Curtis added 22 points and 11 rebounds, as the Griffins moved to 2-0 with a 99-93 win over Frostburg State.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore swingman Cam Rowell (Franklin Regional) scored 14 points off the bench, adding four rebounds, four blocks and four steals over 23 minutes, in a 79-63 win over Penn State Abington.
Rowell was the PAC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.
WCCC: Freshman forward Tommy Davis (Belle Vernon) is leading the Wolfpack in scoring through four games with a 14.5-point average. He had 24 points and 13 rebounds in an 87-69 loss to CCAC.
West Liberty: Junior guard Landon Butler (Latrobe) had nine points and three rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench for his new team as West Liberty opened with a 102-91 victory over Clarion.
Women’s basketball
Clarion: Freshman Kendall Berger (Norwin) started the Golden Eagles’ opening game and scored 11 points in a 96-68 win over Livingstone.
Evansville: Sophomore forward Elle Snyder (Latrobe) had seven points and 11 rebounds in the Aces’ season opener, a 71-66 loss to Southeast Missouri State.
Seton Hill: Six Griffins reached double figures in scoring in a 91-87 win over Concord to tip off the season.
Sophomore Shaye Bailey and senior Helene Cowan each scored 16 points, senior Hallie Cowan added 15, junior Hailee Ford 13 and junior Mia Kalich 10.
USC Upstate: Redshirt sophomore Emma Blair (Latrobe) had eight points in 15 minutes against Georgia. Upstate fell, 78-44.
Wrestling
Ohio: After two weeks of the season, redshirt senior Garrett Thompson (Franklin Regional) is ranked No. 8 nationally at 174 pounds.
Last year, he finished 30-7, won a MAC title and was named the most oustanding wrestler at the conference tournament.
Pitt: Redshirt junior Dayton Pitzer (Mt. Pleasant) scored a match-winning pin for the 19th-ranked Panthers in a 20-19 victory against Princeton.
His 4-minute, 25-second fall against Sebastian Garibaldi in the final bout of the night gave the Panthers the edge.
Saint Vincent: SVC clobbered Pitt-Bradford, 47-6, winning nine of 10 bouts, including four via fall. Pins for the Bearcats came from sophomore Ryan Yocum at 149, sophomore Chase Brandebura at 174, freshman Chase Stuchal at 197, and freshman Jonah McCoy at 285.
Sophomore 149-pounder Anthony Orlandini was named the PAC Wrestler of the Week. He won a title at the Shenandoah Invitational.
Freshman Logan Connolly was tabbed the PAC Newcomer of the Week. He also took a first-place medal home from the Shenandoah Invitational with a win at 133 pounds.
Women’s cross country
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Grace Neubert qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship for the second year in a row. She ran to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional in Newville with a time of 21 minutes, 59.25 seconds.
Men’s soccer
Penn State Behrend: Sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Scalise (Norwin) was named the co-defensive player of the year in the AMCC. Scalise also was named to the All-AMCC First Team. He started 16 of 17 games and went 11-4-2 with a 0.92 goals-against-average with 51 saves.
Pitt-Greensburg: Junior forward Matt Armenio and sophomore defender Arlo McIntyre were named to the All-AMCC First Team. Sophomore midfielder Cam Loveland and junior midfielder Lucas Pitman made the second team.
Armenio led the Bobcats with seven goals, while McIntyre had a goal and four assists.
Seton Hill: Sophomore Ron Klinger, junior James Aubrey and seniors Julian Marker and Vasilis Christodoulou were named to the All-PSAC West First Team.
Freshman Felix Knorn and sophomore Rowan Aisenberry made the second team.
Aubrey led the Griffins with 11 goals, while Marker had four goals and five assists.
Women’s soccer
Clarion: Senior defender Reese Aquilio (Norwin) was named to the All-PSAC West Second Team.
Aquilio started 15 games at center back and helped the Golden Eagles (4-12-3) make the PSAC tournament for the first time.
Pitt-Greensburg: Three Bobcats made the All-AMCC First Team in senior forwards Megan Hickey and Maya Wertelet, and sophomore defender Dionna “Tiger” Santia.
Hickey is a third-time first team pick who had nine goals and four assists for UPG (9-8-3), while Wertelet had six goals and six assists, and Santia had a team-leading 10 assists.
Sophomore forward Bella Carrato (Monessen), senior midfielder Reese Walker, freshman midfielder Abby Ault, sophomore defender Sierra Frisoli and freshman goalkeeper Kira Howcroft made the second team.
Despite goals from Hickey and Carrato, UPG fell to Waynesburg, 3-2, in the ECAC Division III Championship. The Bobcats, who were AMCC semifinalists, finished with a 9-9-3 record.
Saint Vincent: Sophomore goalkeeper Rilyn Warner, sophomore defender Alexis Arlaus and junior midfielder Emma Koller were named to the All-PAC Second Team.
Warner started 19 games and collected 11 shutouts and a 13-4-1 record with a 87.2 save percentage.
Arlaus had two goals and played a key role on the back line, while Koller had 13 goals and four assists.
Washington & Jefferson: Freshman Rylin Bugosh (Mt. Pleasant) was named to the All-PAC Second Team.
She finished with seven goals and four assists in her first college season. She started 16 of 18 games.
Women’s volleyball
Seton Hill: Junior Kendyl Wagner reached 1,000 career digs for the Griffins. The defensive specialist now has 1,021 over three years.
Thiel: Junior Arin DeLattre (Hempfield) had 17 kills, hit .394, and added seven digs and four blocks to pace the Tomcats (17-8) put up 16 service aces and defeated Franciscan, 3-1.
Westminster: Freshman Kylie Anthony contributed 11 digs as Westminster won a PAC quarterfinal against Chatham, 3-1, rallying after a first-set loss.
In a 3-2 loss to Hiram in the semifinals, Anthony put up a career-high 24 digs and eight kills.
Women’s swimming
Grove City: Freshman Patrick Cratty (Latrobe) was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. He won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 48.99 seconds in the Bearcats’ 182-80 win over Saint Vincent.
Women’s wrestling
Waynesburg: Sophomore Faryn DeWitt (Southmoreland) picked up a forfeit win at 110 pounds in a 27-10 loss to Pitt-Johnstown.
