The Clarion women’s soccer team qualified for the PSAC playoffs for the first time in program history, and several Norwin graduates have been part of the run.
Sisters junior Alyssa Aquilo and senior Reese Aquilo have each been in the starting lineup, while freshman Carmella Simco is a freshman on the team.
Midfielder Alyssa Aquilo has played in nine games, starting six, and has one goal. Reese Aquilo, a defender, has started 14 games for the Golden Eagles, who took a 3-11-3 record into the playoffs.
They blanked Edinboro, 1-0, in the first round.
Football
Grove City: Senior running back Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) ran for 48 yards and a touchdown, and senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) made nine tackles in a 28-14 win over Case Western.
IUP: Redshirt sophomore Devin Whitlock (Belle Vernon) tied a career high with 11 receptions — for 143 yards — in a 45-42 victory over Clarion. The win clinched the PSAC West title for the Crimson Hawks.
Mercyhurst: Junior linebacker Eli Binakonsky (Hempfield) posted a career-high 12 tackles, and grad defensive end Jonas King (Mt. Pleasant) added four stops as the Lakers won at Saint Francis (Pa.), 16-15. Binakonsky had 13 tackles all last season.
Penn State: Freshman linebacker Alex Tatsch (Latrobe) is seeing increased snaps for the Nittany Lions. He had two tackles and a pass breakup in a 27-24 loss to No. 2 Indiana, whose offensive coordinator is Mike Shanahan (Norwin).
Saint Vincent: Junior Jake Phillips (Hempfield) threw for 322 and two touchdowns, both to junior wideout Chris Downs, who had 10 catches for 177 yards, and sophomore Matt Davis ran for 126 yards an a score in a 35-24 loss to Waynesburg. Junior defensive back Robbie Labuda (Mt. Pleasant) led the defense with a career-high 17 tackles as SVC fell to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the PAC.
Temple: Junior Conlan Greene (Penn-Trafford) had three tackles and handled the long-snapping duties in a 14-13 loss to Army.
Men’s golf
West Virginia: Sophomore Nick Turowski (Penn-Trafford) took fifth place at the Pearl at Kalauoa Invitational in Aiea, Oahu, carding a blistering 63 in the final round, the second-lowest round in school history. He also shot 76 and 70 for a 54-hole total of 7-under. It was his fourth top 5 finish of the fall season. WVU won the tournament for its third victory in six events this season.
Men’s soccer
Seton Hill: The Griffins finished off the regular season with a 4-1 victory over Lock Haven to finish second in the PSAC West. Freshman Felix Knorn, senior Julian Marker, junior James Aubrey and senior Tristan Wilson scored for the Griffins (11-5-1).
Grove City: Junior defender Colton Hudson (Franklin Regional) had an assist as the Wolverines picked up a 2-0 win over visiting Geneva in the semifinals of the PAC Tournament. The Wolverines went on to win the conference title, their first since 1996. They will now play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 45 years.
Several local players and two coaches chased down a PAC championship. The players are junior defender Jake Kimmich (Franklin Regional), fifth-year midfielder Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional), junior forward Carlo Denis (Greensburg Central Catholic) and senior forward Owen Zimmerman (Kiski Area). Assistant coaches include Grove City and Franklin Regional alum Matt Kimmich and former Franklin Regional coach Rand Hudson, who also played at Grove City.
Women’s soccer
Penn State Behrend: Senior goalkeeper Riley Morningstar (Norwin) earned a shutout behind a defense that did not allow a shot on goal in a 7-0 victory over Pitt-Greensburg in the AMCC championship. Senior defender Annie Klingensmith and junior defender Ashley Ornowski (Norwin) saw time off the bench for the Lions.
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Megan Hickey, senior Maya Wertelet and sophomore Isabella Swartz all scored in a penalty kick shootout as the Bobcats edged Alfred State, 0-0 (3-2) in the AMCC semifinals. UPG advanced to the championship to face Penn State Behrend.
Women’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats swept past Waynesburg on senior night, 3-0, as sophomore outside hitter Dakota Hershberger collected 15 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Another sophomore outside hitter, Meegan Williams, added 10 kills, 11 digs and three aces for SVC (9-14, 7-9), which clinched a spot in the PAC Tournament.
Seton Hill: Senior Payton Rodberg had 11 kills, junior Catie Flohr added 10 and freshman Haley Reed put up 16 assists as the Griffins (14-10, 6-6) swept Edinboro, 3-0. In the win, junior Mallory Meinen recorded her 1,000th career assist.
Thiel: Junior Arin DeLattre (Hempfield) finished with a career-high 19 kills on 33 attempts and hit .545 in a 3-1 loss to Hiram. The Tomcats (16-8) are the No. 2 seed for the PAC Tournament.
Westminster: Freshman Kylie Anthony (Penn-Trafford) reached double-digit digs for the 12th time this season, registering 18 in a 3-1 win over Thiel.
Men’s cross country
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Jake McGhee (Penn-Trafford) finished 68th in 33 minutes, 13.50 seconds at the NCAA Regional Championship at Lock Haven.
Women’s tennis
Saint Vincent: Senior Carolina Walters (Latrobe) was named to the All-PAC First Team in singles. She also made honorable mention in doubles with senior Emily Pierce (Latrobe).
Women’s swimming
Grove City: Freshman Chaeli Keenan (Derry) won both diving events, while qualifying for NCAA regionals, in a 239-48 win over Saint Vincent. Keenan won the 1-meter competition in 251.60 and scored a 158.70 in the 3-meter high board.
Saint Vincent: Senior Rachel Hutchinson was named the PAC Swimmer of the Week. Hutchinson won the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 28.46 seconds and then captured the 200 free in 2:00.90 and 1,650 free (18:42.81) at the York College Invitational.
Westminster: Freshman Olivia Schrock (Hempfield) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2 minutes, 25.55 seconds, finished second in the 100 fly (1:12.38) and was third in the 100 back (1:08.63) in the Titans’ 174-73 win over Chatham.
Men’s swimming
Grove City: Freshman Patrick Cratty (Latrobe) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 48.99 seconds as the Wolverines cruised past Saint Vincent, 182-80.
Saint Vincent: Senior Jacob Dzurica (Hempfield) was named the PAC Swimmer of the Week after he earned two NCAA B-cuts at the York College Invitational. He won the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.56), 200 free (1:45.09) and 100 back (52.77) and posted B times in the 50 free (20.06), 100 free and 400 IM relay.
His teammate, freshman William Schauss, was tabbed the PAC Newcomer of the Week after he won five times at the York College Invitational. He took the 500 free (4:54.79), 400 IM (4:23.68), 100 fly (53.34), and 1,650 free (17:27.29).
Washington & Jefferson: Junior Daniel Jeffries (Hempfield) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.38 seconds and also took third in the 100 free (50.01) in a loss to Ashland. Senior Nathaniel Harden (Hempfield) was second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.20), while sophomore Micah Lohr (Hempfield) finished third in the 100 fly (56.99).
Westminster: Grad student Gino Piraino (Franklin Regional) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 297.25 points, and finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 16.99 seconds in a 158-54 victory against Chatham.
Wrestling
Lock Haven: Redshirt sophomore Lucas Kapusta (Hempfield) pinned his first opponent in 1 minute, 15 seconds, then scored a 4-2 decision for a fast start at the Journeyman Wrangle Mania. The Bald Eagles went 1-1 in the event.
Pitt: Three local redshirt juniors won their matches as the Panthers handled Buffalo, 33-6. Chase Kranitz (Norwin), who used to wrestle for Buffalo, won a 7-2 decision at 184 pounds, while Briar Priest (Hempfield) was an 8-3 winner at 141, and heavyweight Dayton Pitzer (Mt. Pleasant) won a 15-0 technical fall.
Pitt-Johnstown: Redshirt senior Isaiah Vance (Hempfield) picked up a major decision in the final match of the night to lift the third-ranked Mountain Cats to an 18-17 win over No. 19 West Liberty. Vance, ranked No. 1 at heavyweight, defeated Parker Bentley, 10-1.
Men’s basketball
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats are the favorite to win the AMCC. Fifth-year coach Chris Klimchock’s team checked in at No. 1 in the preseason coaches’ poll after an 18-9 season that saw the Bobcats make the conference semifinals.
Top returnees include sophomore Trent Rozich and junior Matt Marinchak, both All-AMCC picks who averaged 15 points apiece. Rozich is the AMCC preseason player of the year.
UPG opened the season with an 82-80 win over Baldwin Wallace as five players scored in double figures. Senior Michael Bigley had 15 points, senior Jackson Byer 14, sophomore Ty Keffer (Southmoreland) 13, Rozich 12 and Marinchak 11.
Marinchak’s jumper with seven seconds remaining proved to be the difference. UPG made 27 of 35 free throws and outrebounded Baldwin-Wallace, 42-27.
Pitt-Johnstown: Junior guard Adam Bilinsky (Norwin) held his own against Pitt, scoring 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting (3 for 6 3-pointers) in a 100-65 loss at Petersen Events Center.
Saint Vincent: Grad student Mike Iuzzolino scored a game-high 24 points, including 5 of 7 3-pointers, while senior Jaden Gales had 12 points and sophomore Terek Crosby had all 10 of his points in the first half in an 85-68 win over Chatham in the season opener for both teams.
Women’s basketball
Saint Vincent: New coach Kam Gissendanner earned her first victory as the Bearcats (1-1) defeated Marywood, 69-48, at the Messiah Tip-Off Tournament. Junior Danielle Pontius had 15 points, senior Makenna Maier added 14 and senior Camden Bashor chipped in 12 in the win. Maier also pulled down 13 rebounds.
Robert Morris: Senior forward Bailey Kuhns (Greensburg Central Catholic) made her debut with the Colonials and scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The transfer from Mercyhurst added three assists. Kuhns was an All-NEC First Team player last season when she led the league in scoring at 19.9 ppg. She had a double-double in 26 of 27 games for the Lakers in their first season in Division I.
Seton Hill: Coach Maeve Gallagher’s team is ranked second in the PSAC West preseason poll. Seton Hill made the NCAA Division II Tournament last season for the second time in program history. Top returning players include senior twins Helene and Hallie Cowan, junior Mia Kalich and senior Abby Mankins (Greensburg Salem).
Local players on the roster include newcomer Kaitlyn Mankins (Greensburg Salem), a sophomore who transferred from D’Youville, and junior Anna Rafferty (Latrobe).
