The Westmoreland County Community College women’s cross country team took ownership the Wolfpack Invitational, led by freshman Brooke Bertovich, who won the individual title with a time of 24 minutes, 3.7 seconds in her first college race.

Teammate and freshman Natalie Naponic (Norwin) placed third (24:17.7), freshmen Jenn Baldwin (Southmoreland) and Jenna Hildenbrand (Norwin) finished sixth and ninth, respectively.

Football

IUP: Senior linebacker Nick Amendola (Norwin) had three tackles and an interception in the Crimson Hawks’ season opener, a 24-13 win over Lock Haven.

Mercyhurst: Freshman Dustin Shoaf (Yough) had two receptions for 23 yards in a 21-16 win over Lake Erie. Shoaf, listed as a fullback, finished his high school career with 5,053 yards, third all-time in Westmoreland County.

Robert Morris: A pair of local players are starting for the Colonials’ offense: redshirt junior tight end Steve Petrick (Norwin) and redshirt sophomore right tackle Bussy Remaley (Hempfield).

Women’s soccer

Cleveland State: Junior forward Essence Canady (North Huntingdon/Oakland Catholic) has four starts and a goal so far this season. She had three goals as a sophomore and made the Horizon League All-Tournament team and started 11 games as a freshman.

Men’s golf

West Virginia: Junior Mark Goetz (Greensburg/The Kiski School) posted rounds of 73, 74 and 72 for a 6-over-par total of 219 and a tie for 30th at the Minnesota Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. WVU took fifth overall.

Men’s tennis

Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Turner Price (Penn-Trafford) was named AMCC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Last year’s conference newcomer of the year, Price won matches at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots for the Bobcats to improve his season mark to 12-3.

Women’s volleyball

Saint Vincent: Freshman Madi Marsico was named PAC Rookie of the Week. The defensive specialist had double-figure digs in five matches, totaling 85 digs, including 28 in a win over Shenandoah. She is second in the PAC with 151 digs.

Seton Hill: The Griffins went 3-1 at the Ferris State Tournament as they defeated Wayne State and Ohio Dominican (3-0), New Haven (3-1) before losing to Ferris State, 3-0.

Senior Viktoria Farian had 56 kills and 58 digs in the event and made the all-tournament team.
