Canada, Sidney Crosby stunned by Denmark in quarterfinals of world championships

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby recorded an assist for Canada, which was upset by Denmark, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Championship tournament at the Jyske Bank Boxen arena in Herning, Denmark.

Forward Nick Olesen scored the winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation as Denmark orchestrated one of the biggest upsets in IIHF history.

Crosby opened the contest as Canada’s second-line center and recorded four shots and was 4 for 8 (50.0%) in faceoffs while logging 21:35 of ice time on 23 shifts.

Highlights:

Canada finished the tournament in fifth place. Denmark will face Switzerland in the semifinal round at 12:20 p.m. Saturday.

Also in the quarterfinal round, Utah Mammoth forward Logan Cooley, a native of West Mifflin, recorded two assists for the United States in a 5-2 win against Finland at Avicii Arena in Stockholm.

Opening play as the United States’ top-line center, Cooley was 1 for 12 (8.3%) in faceoffs while logging 18:26 of ice time on 21 shifts.

The United States will face Sweden at 8:20 p.m. Saturday.
