Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl star Jacoby Jones died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease caused by high blood pressure, according to a New Orleans medical examiner.
Jones was just 40 years old when he died on July 14. The listed cause of death was natural.
Jones helped power the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers. He returned a kickoff 109 yards for a touchdown, which remains the longest play in Super Bowl history.
Jons is also known for receiving a Joe Flacco pass in the ‘Mile High Miracle’, where Jones caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Flacco with just 43 seconds left in the game. The Ravens would go on to win that divisional round clash in overtime.
While best known for his time with the Ravens, Jones joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015 before calling it a career. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin released a statement following Jones’ death in July.
“My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Jacoby Jones during this difficult time. I enjoyed coaching him during his time with the Steelers,” Tomlin said on X.
Jones earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2012, the most prolific kick return season of his career. He finished his career as a decorated kick returner and Ravens hero for his contributions to the team’s Super Bowl run.
Following his career, Jones decided to take up a coaching career. That included stops at Morgan State and Alabama State as a position coach over the years.
