CB Cory Trice returns to Steelers practice, remains on IR
The embattled Pittsburgh Steelers secondary added another piece Wednesday, this one from an internal source.
Cornerback Cory Trice Jr. returned to practice at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, marking the first time he’d participated in a practice since early during training camp at Saint Vincent College. Trice, who remains on the injured reserve list, was out because of a hamstring injury.
“I’m still smiling from ear to ear, man,” Trice said after his first practice in 2 1/2 months. “I’m loving it.
“I feel like I’m ready to go. I’ve got to make sure I’m ready. But it’s really all on (management), though, (when he will be activated). I’m just showing up and working.”
The 6-foot-3 Trice has worked through myriad injuries over his three-year NFL career, appearing in only six regular-season games for the Steelers since they made him a seventh-round pick in 2023. The organization at times has viewed him as a possible future starter.
During last season in his only NFL action, Trice made 21 tackles (15 solo, one for loss) with an interception and two passes defended over 193 snaps played on defense and 60 on special teams.

Trice started the 2024 regular-season finale this past Jan. 4, but according to Pro Football Focus, he was tagged for a staggering eight catches on nine targets for 80 yards and a touchdown when in coverage on Cincinnati Bengals star receiver Ja’Marr Chase.
Over the past two games (each a defeat), the Steelers have allowed 68 points, 994 total yards, 688 passing yards and six passing touchdowns. The team agreed to a trade for veteran safety Kyle Dugger, but that deal had not yet been officially consummated by Wednesday afternoon. The Steelers also announced the addition of veteran safety Darrick Forrest to their practice squad.
“I feel like I can prove myself to be a starter,” Trice said, “and be a top corner in this league for a long time. So, I feel like I’m right on track where I need to be.”
Trice taking part in a practice opens up a 21-day window during which he must be activated to the 53-man roster or he is lost for the remainder of the season.
Linebacker Malik Harrison and backup quarterback Will Howard are similarly taking part in practice while still on IR. Harrison’s window expires early next week.
