Central Catholic's Rocco Salvitti wins WPGA Junior Championship
Central Catholic sophomore Rocco Salvitti shot a 4-under par 68 on Monday to capture the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association’s 100th Junior Championship at Grove City Country Club.
The Canonsburg native who led the Tri-State Open after the first day in June edged Riverside’s Justin Hand, who shot a 3-under 69.
Greensburg Salem grad Jeff Mankins was third at 2-under and Penn-Trafford’s Nick Turowski was fourth at 1-over 73.
Salvitti’s round included four birdies and an eagle. He also had two bogeys.
Grzegorczyk wins Aber Memorial
Amateur Tanner Grzegorczyk shot a 3-under par 67 to capture the Dr. John Aber Memorial Classic at Allegheny Country Club.
Amateurs Darin Kowalski and Austin Lemieux tied for second. Kowalski recently won the Pittsburgh Open, and Austin is the son of former Penguins great Mario Lemieux. Both shot a 2-under par 68.
Jason Robinson and Jim Cichra were the low professionals in the event, shooting a 1-under par 69.
Western Amateur begins Tuesday
Connor Schmidt and Palmer Jackson are in Carmel, Ind., getting ready to play in the Western Amateur on Tuesday.
Schmidt, a Peters Township grad and Drexel senior, is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Sunnehanna Amateur. Schmidt finished at 9-under par.
Jackson is playing his third consecutive big amateur event. He was in Carrolton, Texas, two weeks ago for the Southern Amateur and last week, he played in the Sunnehanna Amateur.
The Franklin Regional 2019 grad and Notre Dame sophomore is prepping for the United States Golf Association’s Amateur next month in Oregon.
