CMU's Michelle Karabin recipient of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
Michelle Karabin found a way to marry academics and athletics in near perfect fashion in her time at Carnegie Mellon, and the NCAA took notice.
Karabin, a senior and a graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic, was chosen to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for her efforts in the classroom and on the CMU track and field team.
There are 21 such scholarships available for men and women in all three NCAA divisions. To be eligible, student-athletes must be in the final year of college athletics or have completed their athletic eligibility.
Recipients receive a $10,000 grant to be used for graduate study within one year of the award. Karabin is the second CMU student-athlete to receive the postgrad scholarship, joining Debarati Bhanja, a recipient in 2018-19.
Karabin, a two-time College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America first-team selection, plans to pursue a Ph.D. in bio-medical engineering starting next month at Pitt.
She qualified for the NCAA Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships in the pole vault, her second appearance at NCAAs.
A team captain, she is a six-time all-region pick.
In 2018, Karabin interned at the Naval Nuclear Laboratories and served as vice president and secretary on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
Earlier this year, she won the NCAA’s Elite-90 Award after the mechanical and bio-medical engineering major achieved a 4.0 grade-point average for her career.
She also recently was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) representative for NCAA Woman of the Year.
Congrats, Michelle Karabin! #TartanProud @MellonField @CarnegieMellon https://t.co/69oSfTusi2
