Tommy Kuhl, of Illinois, watches his tee shot on the third hole during an NCAA golf tournament in Windermere, Fla.

A University of Illinois golfer, who shot a course record round of 10-under par 62, was forced to disqualify himself for a rules violation, according to a report in Golf Monthly.

Tommy Kuhl, a fifth-year senior at the University of Illinois, informed tournament officials that he’d repaired aeration marks on the greens during his round. Repairing spike marks on greens is allowed but fixing aeration marks is not.

Kuhl was playing at a local U.S. Open qualifier at Illini Country Club in Springfield, Ill., over the weekend. The Golf Monthly report said Kuhl reported his violation to officials after a teammate remarked about the difficulty the aerated greens caused.

“I should know better,” Kuhl told mondayq.com. “It comes down to me. I should know that rule.”

Kuhl has had an outstanding year for the University of Illinois, averaging just over 70 per round and finishing in the top 16 in his last 11 events, according to mondayq.com.

The 2023 U.S. Open will take place June 15-18 at the Los Angeles Country Club.
