Connellsville grad Madison Wiltrout captures first ACC javelin title

Connellsville’s Madison Wiltrout competes in the Girl’s Class AAA Javelin at the PIAA track and field individual championships at Shippensburg University on Saturday, May 27, 2017. Wiltrout won her fourth state gold medal in the event.

North Carolina redshirt freshman Madison Wiltrout captured the ACC women’s javelin title Thursday with a personal collegiate best throw of 182 feet, 5 inches.

The 2017 Connellsville graduate, a four-time WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA champion, has been recovering from right elbow surgery in the PIAA finals in 2015 when she burst on the scene with a National Federation of High Schools record throw at Norwin in a WPIAL qualifier.

She tore her ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in her right elbow on her second throw in the state finals, which was against a stiff wind.

Wiltrout said the injury occurred because a series of breakdowns in her technique (dropping the elbow, rushing and a bad plant).

She owns the NHSF record of 185-8 and PIAA championship record of 182-8.

She was a two-time Pennsylvania Gatorade Girls Track Athlete of the Year.

Wiltrout was shut down by the North Carolina coaches and medical staff in 2017-18 season after she competed in the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in 2017.
