The Pittsburgh Penguins gained one defenseman but lost another Wednesday, at least by way of practice participation.

John Marino was absent from Wednesday’s session at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township. But Mark Friedman was back on the ice with teammates, appearing to be in a full participatory fashion after he’d missed the past three games because of a lower-body injury suffered during a March 4 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Marino played 19 minutes, 19 seconds in the Penguins’ 4-2 win against the New York Rangers on Tuesday — both New York goals deflected off of him. Sullivan characterized Marino’s absence Wednesday as a “maintenance day.”

Friedman was injured during his second game for the Penguins and against his former team from which he was acquired off waivers two weeks ago.

“I feel good,” Friedman said. “Just an upper-body injury there, and it was nice that it was only a week (and not longer). It was definitely nice to get out there today.”

Friedman skated on an extra fourth pairing during line rushes at practice. Chad Ruhwedel was paired with Marcus Pettersson in place of where Marino skated Tuesday.

Keep up with the Pittsburgh Penguins all season long.
