Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward sits on the bench with ice on his left ankle after it was rolled up on in the third play of 7-shots drill during practice Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022 at Saint Vincent College.

The sight of defensive captain Cameron Heyward kneeling on the ground in pain wasn’t exactly what the Pittsburgh Steelers wanted to see on the final day of training camp at Saint Vincent.

Heyward went down on the third play of seven shots, the 2-point simulation that typically begins each Steelers practice. After a few tense moments, Heyward was helped to his feet and hobbled off Chuck Noll Field with an ankle injury.

Heyward remained on the bench, where he had his ankle and shin wrapped. About 45 minutes later, he was whisked to the locker room in a cart, but he returned to catch the end of practice.

“I just got rolled up,” Heyward said. “I’ll be good.”

Heyward admitted he initially feared a more serious injury when he went down.

“At first, I was a little nervous, but it’s all good,” he said. “This happens.”

Inside linebacker Myles Jack watched the play unfold from the sideline and, in his words, “the whole practice stopped.”

“At first it scares you, your heart drops,” Jack said. “But he’s a tough guy. It wasn’t anything crazy. … It looks like he’s doing good and moving around. You never want to see that as a linebacker. You want the D-line to be healthy.”

Fullback Derek Watt (shoulder) and inside linebacker Marcus Allen (hamstring) were in uniform for the first time since the first week of camp and participated in individual drills. Defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi and outside linebacker Alex Highsmith were among the players who did not practice.
