Injuries have forced Pittsburgh Steelers guard David DeCastro to miss the majority of padded practices during this training camp at Heinz Field.

David DeCastro continues to be an infrequent participant at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp practices, but coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t sound too concerned.

“He’s just dealing with a lower-body injury,” Tomlin said via video conference call after Monday’s practice at Heinz Field. “We’re managing it, he’s managing it. Hopefully he will get back out there soon.”

A five-time Pro Bowl guard, DeCastro did not take part in any practices the first week pads were put on beginning Aug. 17. The precise injury that prevented him from those workouts was never disclosed. But four days after returning to the practice field, DeCastro left Friday’s night practice/scrimmage because of injury.

Since November 2013, DeCastro has missed only two regular-season games because of injury.

Tomlin listed safety Terrell Edmunds (knee), receiver Diontae Johnson and defensive lineman Chris Wormley as those who were limited during Monday’s practice. They join receiver Ryan Switzer and running back Wendell Smallwood as those easing their way back returning from injury absences.

“It’s a lot of things that come with training camp, injuries, lack of availability in the short-term standpoint,” Tomlin said, “and a lot of those guys are just working their way back into action. And we are glad that we are.”
