Daniel Day resigned as Seton Hill’s football coach after six seasons.

Citing the desire to pursue opportunities outside of football, Seton Hill coach Dan Day resigned Friday after six seasons.

Seton Hill went into a hurry-up offense to replace him, immediately promoting Kevin May, Day’s defensive coordinator.

Day, who has the most football coaching wins at the university, went 18-36 leading his alma mater, including a 6-5 mark (4-3 PSAC West) in 2023.

He believes the program will be in good hands.

“Deciding to leave Seton Hill football was an incredibly difficult decision to reach,” Day said in a news release. “I must say one of the major reasons that the timing was right is because of who is taking over this program. I have been around some really great coaches in my career, and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that coach May is the best football mind, teacher, and leader of men that I have ever been around. Kevin is a better coach than me in so many ways that I know our program will not just continue to be successful, but under his leadership it will grow to new heights.”

Day is a former Griffins lineman who was a member of the program’s first team in 2005. He helped the Griffins reach the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

“Words cannot begin to express my appreciation for the opportunity to lead this program,” Day said. “There are so many memories and relationships that have been built through this journey that it has been such a special place.”

May recently was named to the American Football Coaches Association’s “35 under 35” as one of the top rising coaches in the country in Division I, II and III.

“Taking over for coach Day is bittersweet,” May said. “Six years ago, he took a chance on me to coordinate his defense. Working for and with him has been the best experience of my coaching career. While I am sad to see him go, I look forward to building upon the strong culture that he has established. I am enthusiastic about the program’s future and fully committed to working tirelessly to deliver a product that will make coach Day, the alumni, the university, and our fans proud.”

May’s defense ranked second in the PSAC in 2022 and third in ’23. The “Flex” scheme was featured by ESPN.com.

He came to Seton Hill after four seasons at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
