John Kerr has been a big presence at the net for the third-ranked Penn State volleyball team.

On Tuesday, he picked up a big award.

Kerr, a Derry graduate, was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week.

Kerr, a 6-foot-6 senior opposite hitter, led the Nittany Lions (6-0) to a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Pepperdine and a 3-1 win over No. 8 Stanford at the First Point Collegiate Challenge in Austin, Texas.

He posted 20 kills and a .421 hitting percentage, plus five digs and three blocks, in the first win.

Against Stanford, he followed up with 15 kills, two aces and eight digs.

Penn State, which has three wins against ranked opponents, has not started 6-0 since 2009.

Kerr is hitting .411 and averaging 4.1 kills per set.
