District college football roundup: Cal (Pa.) opens season with win
Roman Purcell threw for 180 yards and scored on a 7-yard run and Kenny Lewis returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown to lead Cal (Pa.) to a 23-19 victory over the University of Charleston (W.Va.) in its season opener Thursday night.
Bobbie Boyd Jr. ran for 108 yards, D’Avoy Johnson caught five passes for 73 yards and Harry Radcliffe made three field goals for the Vulcans (1-0). Cale Barringer returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score for Charleston (1-1).
Ashland 13, IUP 9 – Ty-Aris Stevenson scored on a 1-yard run with 2:10 to play as Ashland sent IUP to a loss in its season opener. Cameron Blair hit Jonathan Merrimee with a 25-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter for Ashland (1-0).
Matthew Rueve threw for 221 yards, one touchdown – a 55-yarder to Randy Washington – and three interceptions for the Crimson Hawks (0-1)
Clarion 48, West Virginia Wesleyan 20 – Anthony Guercio went 11 for 15 for 125 yards and three touchdowns and ran six times for 104 yards and two more scores as Clarion (2-0) routed West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2).
Davon Jones caught two touchdown passes, Holt Egan grabbed the other and Khalon Simmons ran nine times for 71 yards and two TDS for the Golden Eagles, who led 48-0.
Marietta 12, Westminster 8 – Vante’ Hodges ran 37 times for 171 yards and a touchdown and Antwon Johnson added the go-ahead 3-yard TD run in the third quarter to lead Marietta (1-0) past Westminster (0-1). Taite Beachy caught four passes for 44 yards and a score for the Titans.
