District college football roundup: Saint Vincent lights up scoreboard in win over Bethany
Jake Phillips threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns as Saint Vincent put up robust offensive numbers in a 57-35 victory over Bethany on Saturday night.
Chris Downs caught eight passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns, Keegan O’Brien made four grabs for 104 yards and a score and Julian Walker ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns for the Bearcats (2-4, 1-3).
Brett Phillips threw for 403 yards and a touchdown and ran for 104 yards and another score for Bethany (0-5, 0-3). Jermain Beersingh had 10 catches for 203 yards.
Division II
Clarion 48, Gannon 46 – Andrew Kurtas kicked a 33-yard field goal with four seconds left as Clarion (5-1, 1-1) defeated Gannon (1-5, 1-1) in PSAC play. Jake Ferguson threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 81 yards and another TD for Clarion, which led 21-0 after the first quarter. Clarion’s Davon Jones caught nine passes for 144 yards. Ty Hurst’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Donnell Mason with 1:33 left in the fourth quarter put Gannon ahead for the first time in the game. Hurst threw for 424 yards and five touchdowns while Mason caught four passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns.
Edinboro 35, Cal (Pa.) 29 – Jeremiah Neeley caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Nico Marchitelli with 1:35 left to lead Edinboro to a PSAC victory over Cal (Pa.). Harry Radcliffe made an 18-yard field goal with 3:21 to go to give Cal (4-2, 2-1) a 29-27 lead. Caron Robinson ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns and Jerry Dinkins rushed for 96 yards and two scores for the Fighting Scots (3-3, 3-1).
Slippery Rock 49, Seton Hill 7 – JayJay Jordan ran for 189 yards and a touchdown and DaOne Owens threw for 131 yards and a TD and ran for 79 yards and three touchdowns as No. 24 Slippery Rock (4-2, 1-2) beat Seton Hill (3-4, 1-2) in PSAC play. Slippery Rock gained 410 rushing yards and 541 yards overall. Ky’Ron Craggette rushed for 112 yards for Seton Hill.
Division III
Case Western 62, Allegheny 21 – Stefan Lopez ran for 44 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 10 yards and two more scores to lead Case Western (3-1, 3-2-1) to a PAC victory. Jake Kavcic ran an interception back 52 yards for a score. Nick Barker threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns for Allegheny (2-4, 2-2).
Grove City 24, Waynesburg 14 – Dominic DiNinno scored on a 48-yard interception return and Seth McGroerty returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown as Grove City (3-2, 2-1) picked up a PAC victory despite being held to 242 yards of offense. Joane Polynice returned a fumble 48 yards for a score for Waynesburg (2-4, 2-2).
Johns Hopkins 28, Carnegie Mellon 27 – Bay Harvey threw for 245 yards and a touchdown and ran for 59 yards and two TDs as No. 3 Johns Hopkins (5-0, 2-0) overcame an early 17-0 deficit to defeat No. 17 Carnegie Mellon (3-2, 1-1) in a Centennial Conference matchup. Josh Moore caught nine passes for 146 yards and a touchdown for Johns Hopkins. Joey McGinnis IV threw for 307 yards and a touchdown for the Tartans.
Geneva 51, Thiel 38 – In PAC play, Caleb Romano threw for 402 yards and three touchdowns and tacked on two rushing TDs as Geneva (3-1, 3-1) beat Thiel (0-5, 0-3). Seth Tyson’s eight receptions for 121 yards led a trio of Golden Tornadoes over 100 receiving yards. Keaton Baker added seven receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown and Luke Crumbacher caught six passes for 110 yards and a TD. Keller Herzberger threw for 447 yards and five touchdowns for Thiel, including two to Riley Dunbar, who caught nine passes for 147 yards.
Washington & Jefferson 24, Westminster 7 – Kellan Stahl threw for 321 yards and a touchdown, Andrew Sharp ran for 69 yards and a score and Washington & Jefferson (3-2, 3-0) allowed 213 yards of offense in a PAC win. Quentin Goode threw for 108 yards and a touchdown for Westminster (3-2, 2-1).
Division I FCS
Mercyhurst 19, Wagner 7 – Brian Trobel ran for 120 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Mercyhurst (3-4, 2-0) to an NEC victory over Wagner (1-5, 0-1). Trobel’s 3-yard touchdown run gave Mercyhurst a 6-0 lead in the second quarter and Alex Gevaudan’s 76-yard touchdown pass to Trobel put the Lakers up 12-7 at halftime. Trobel’s 4-yard touchdown run made it 19-7 with 4½ minutes left in the third quarter and the Lakers’ defense took it from there as Wagner crossed midfield only once in the second half.
