District college football roundup: Fairmont State fends off Seton Hill comeback bid

Leonard Farrow ran for 274 yards and two touchdowns, and Fairmont State held off a Seton Hill surge to come away with a 24-21 victory in the season opener for both teams Thursday.

Ky’Ron Craggette ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns — an 8-yarder with 14 minutes, 8 seconds left and a 1-yarder with 5:02 remaining — but the Griffins (0-1) couldn’t climb all the way back from a 24-7 deficit. Isaac Ashley caught four passes for 95 yards and a score for Seton Hill.

Clarion 34, Wheeling 0 — Anthony Guercio threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 51 yards and two more scores as Clarion (1-0) dominated in its season opener.

The Golden Eagles held Wheeling (0-1) to 180 yards of offense. Zach Slomers caught five passes for 79 yards and Holt Egan and JaTawn Williams caught touchdown passes.

Edinboro 29, East Stroudsburg 14 — Nico Marchitelli threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns, all to Jaret Frantz, as Edinboro (1-0) jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter to win its season opener.

Marchitelli also ran for a touchdown. Frantz caught six passes for 78 yards. Sean McTaggert threw for 165 yards and two interceptions and ran for two scores for East Stroudsburg (0-1).

Youngstown State 24, Mercyhurst 15 — Beau Brungard threw for 114 yards and rushed for 145 more, including two touchdowns, and to lead Youngstown State.

The Youngstown State defense forced four turnovers, the last an interception with 2:17 remaining in the fourth quarter by Dathan Hickey to seal it. Adam Urena was 32 of 48 for 311 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Mercyhurst.
