District college football roundup: Rock sets records, moves to 10-0 with win over Gannon

Roland Rivers III threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns as Slippery Rock moved to 10-0 for the first time in school history by defeating Gannon, 56-7, on Saturday in PSAC play.

Rivers III set the single-season (36) and career passing touchdown marks (64) for the Rock. Jake Chapla’s six extra points gave the Plum grad the all-time PSAC scoring lead for kickers with 362 points.

Henry Litwin caught nine passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns for Slippery Rock (10-0, 7-0). Zevin Holley rushed for 147 yards and Gannon’s (2-8, 1-6) only touchdown.

No. 19 IUP 35, Edinboro 6 — In a PSAC matchup, Quinton Maxwell threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns as IUP (9-1, 6-1) beat Edinboro (3-7, 3-4). IUP’s JoJo Gause caught seven passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Nazir Streater had two interceptions for IUP.

Mercyhurst 57, Clarion 10 — Garrett Owens rushed 12 times for 192 yards and touchdowns of 2, 36 and 98 yards to lead Mercyhurst (5-5, 3-4) to the PSAC win at Clarion (3-7, 1-6). Mercyhurst forced five turnovers, with Hunter Merritt returning two interceptions for 88 yards.

Cal (Pa.) 28, Seton Hill 14 — Noah Mitchell threw three touchdown passes, two to Derrick Caraway, as the Vulcans (7-3, 5-2) topped Seton Hill (2-7, 2-5).

Division III

Carnegie Mellon 20, Westminster 14 — Brandon Nguyen kicked second-half field goals of 38 and 41 yards to give Carnegie Mellon (7-2, 6-2) the win over Westminster (6-2, 5-2) in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference matchup. Luke Bikulege and Chris Haas scored on 44- and 3-yard runs, respectively, in the first quarter for the Tartans before Cole Konieczka hit Connor Cox with two touchdowns passes to tie the score.

Grove City 45, Geneva 28 — Wesley Schools ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns as Grove City (7-2, 6-2) overcame a slow start to beat Geneva (3-6, 3-5) in PAC play. Josh Ehst added 210 passing yards and three touchdowns for the Wolverines, which trailed 14-10 at halftime before scoring 35 second-half points. Amos Luptak ran for 179 yards and three touchdowns to lead Geneva.

Washington & Jefferson 42, Saint Vincent 10 — Sean Doran had 12 tackles, an 18-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 48-yard fumble return in Washington & Jefferson’s PAC win against Saint Vincent (2-7, 2-6). Jacob Adams threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns for W&J (6-3, 5-3). Saint Vincent’s Lorenzo Cota threw for 221 yards and a 63-yard touchdown to Sam Nowicki.

Case Western Reserve 27, Waynesburg 24 — The Spartans (9-0, 8-0) clinched their first PAC title by edging the Yellowjackets. Justin Flack rushed for 126 yards and a TD for Waynesburg (1-8, 1-7)

Bethany 37, Thiel 7 — The Bison (4-5, 4-4) held Thiel (0-9, 0-8) to 118 yards of offense and picked off three passes to win the PAC matchup. Chas Blango (Mt. Lebanon) and Daniel Gibson (Woodland Hills) had four sacks each for Bethany.

Allegheny 24, Wooster 14 — Chase Balla (Valley) rushed for a touchdown and had 10 tackles to lead the Gators (3-6, 3-5 North Coast Athletic Conference) to their second straight win.

FCS

Central Connecticut 38, St. Francis (Pa.) 31 (OT) — Aaron Winchester threw a 21-yard pass to Kyren Petteway in overtime as Central Connecticut rallied past upset-minded St. Francis (Pa.). The Red Flash (4-6, 2-4) outgained CCSU 434-367 in total offense, ran a dozen more plays, and led 31-28 lead with a little more than four minutes left in the game.
