District college football roundup: Saint Vincent wins in coach's debut
Jake Phillips threw for 199 yards and four touchdowns to lead Saint Vincent to a 28-7 victory over Hilbert in its season opener Saturday, giving Casey Goff a win in his debut as Bearcats coach.
Chris Downs caught six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns and Julian Walker rushed for 74 yards for Saint Vincent, which gave up just 198 yards of offense, including just 74 yards through the air. Mike Hanlon led Hilbert (0-1) with 73 rushing yards.
Division II
Seton Hill 42, West Liberty 21 – Boden St. Marie threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns and Darius Patterson returned an interception 74 yards for a score as Seton Hill (1-1) scored 21 points in the third quarter to break open a close game and pick up its first win of the season. Clint Washington caught three passes for 76 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown in the first quarter, for the Griffins. Kohl Meisman threw for 182 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for West Liberty (0-2).
Saginaw Valley State 49, Gannon 28 – Nine ballcarriers combined to run 46 times for 287 yards and six touchdowns as Saginaw Valley State (1-1) beat Gannon (0-2). Mason McKenzie ran for 100 yards and Michael Jamerson and Terrence Brown Jr. each scored twice. Ty Hurst threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns for Gannon.
Division III
Carnegie Mellon 20, Chicago 0 – Carnegie Mellon (1-0) held Chicago (0-1) to 64 total yards and four first downs in its nonconference win. Joey McGinnis IV threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns and Nick McCullough caught nine passes for 93 yards for the Tartans, who amassed 432 yards on offense. The longest play Carnegie Mellon’s defense allowed was a 12-yard pass.
Denison 35, Allegheny 24 – Blayton Reid ran 39 times for 187 yards and a touchdown and Tyler Green threw for 225 yards and two scores to lead Denison (1-0) to a season-opening win. Allegheny (0-1) relied on big plays, including a 70-yard touchdown pass from Carson Colucci to Devin Larry and interception returns for touchdowns of 41 yards by Elisah Banks and 82 yards by Landon Wayne.
Grove City 31, Cortland 14 – Noah Wheeler and Ryan Montgomery had two interceptions each as Grove City (1-0) picked off five passes in its win over Cortland (0-1). Wheeler scored on a 36-yard interception return in the third quarter. Breck Peacock caught seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown from Sutton Ellis, who threw for 135 yards. Ian Demeri added 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Grove City. Mike Rescigno threw for 161 yards and ran for 62 yards and both Cortland touchdowns.
John Carroll 48, Waynesburg 14 – Nick Semptimphelter threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns to Kenneth Rawls to lead John Carroll (1-0) to the nonconference win at Waynesburg (0-1). Rawls caught six passes for 97 yards. John Carroll led at halftime, 38-0. Tyler Richmond caught two passes for 77 yards and a 61-yard touchdown for Waynesburg.
Utica 49, Washington & Jefferson 31 – Tyler Szalkowski threw for 528 yards and four touchdowns as Utica (1-0) outdueled Washington & Jefferson (0-1) in nonconference play. Utica’s Bryce Palmer caught eight passes for 126 yards and one touchdown, Antonio Cianfarani had five receptions for 126 yards and one TD and Tyshawn Taylor had four receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown. The Presidents’ Kellen Stahl threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns to John Peduzzi, who caught eight passes for 107 yards. Utica (593 yards) and Washington & Jefferson (421 yards) combined for 1014 yards of offense.
Widener 44, Geneva 18 – Eli Warfel threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yarder to Malachi Holmes, and ran for 71 yards and two more scores to lead Widener (1-0) to a season-opening win. For Geneva (0-1), Caleb Romano threw for 259 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Division I FCS
Buffalo 45, St. Francis 6 – Former Penn State quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead Buffalo (1-1), which had 503 yards offense and 32 first downs, over St. Francis (0-2), which had 126 yards of offense, just 11 on the ground. Al-Jay Henderson rushed for two touchdowns and finished with 98 yards on 24 carries for Buffalo. The Red Flash scored their points with 10 minutes remaining on Jordan Theodore’s 1-yard run, coming after Craig Joyner’s interception.
Mercyhurst 48, New Haven 14 – Adam Urena threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns as Mercyhurst (1-1) amassed 647 yards of offense in its nonconference win against New Haven (0-2). Dylan Evans caught eight passes for 165 yards and a touchdown and Brian Trobel rushed for 114 yards and three TDs. A.J. Duffy tossed for 183 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
