District college football roundup: Slippery Rock rolls past Seton Hill in PSAC West opener
No. 12-ranked Slippery Rock scored 28 straight points to earn a 34-14 victory over Seton Hill in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West opener Saturday at Offutt Field in Greensburg.
Brayden Long threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score for the Rock, which improved to 4-0, 1-0.
Seton Hill quarterback Hayden Teska (Greensburg Salem) completed 14 of 28 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Ky’Ron Craggette (Connellsville) ran for 73 yards and a score for the Griffins (1-3, 0-1).
Division II
Cal (Pa.) 31, Edinboro 10 — Omari Hopkins caught six passes for 121 yards and a touchdown as Cal (Pa.) (2-1, 1-0) opened up PSAC play by defeating Edinboro (1-3, 0-1). Davis Black threw for 219 yards and a touchdown for the Vulcans while Eric Willis III caught six passes for 83 yards and one TD.
Gannon 27, Clarion 20 — Nate Mikell threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns—both to Donell Mason—as Gannon (1-3, 1-0) overcame a 20-point second-quarter deficit to defeat Clarion (1-3, 0-1) in PSAC play. Mason caught six passes for 164 yards. Clarion jumped to an early lead on touchdown runs by Paul Newton and Anthony Guercio and two field goals by Andrew Kurtas before Mikell hit Donell with an 11-yard scoring pass towards the end of the first half to put Gannon on the scoreboard.
IUP 30, Mercyhurst 13 — Karst Hunter threw for 142 yards and ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns to lead IUP (3-1, 1-0) to the PSAC win over Mercyhurst (1-3, 0-1). Darius Bruce picked up six tackles, broke up three passes and had one of IUP’s four sacks. Adam Urena threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns for Mercyhurst.
Division III
Allegheny 31, Bethany 20 — Jack Johnson threw for 328 yards and two touchdowns as Allegheny (2-2, 2-2) beat Bethany (0-3, 0-3) in PAC play. Declan O’Brien caught nine passes for 214 yards and a 63-yard touchdown for the Gators, which trailed by 10 late in the first half. Malcolm Denomme recorded 12 tackles, a sack and returned a fumble for a 64-yard touchdown for Allegheny’s defense. Kayrus Sam tossed for 248 yards and two touchdowns for Bethany.
Washington & Jefferson 56, Thiel 14 — Jacob Pugh hit John Peduzzi with three first-half touchdown passes as Washington & Jefferson (4-0, 4-0) downed Thiel (1-3, 1-3) in PAC play. Pugh threw for 187 yards and ran for a touchdown while Peduzzi caught five passes for 96 yards. Avery Keith and Dawson Dietz had two sacks each for the Presidents, which held Thiel to 135 total yards.
Westminster 31, Waynesburg 20 — In a PAC contest, Ryan Gomes rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown as Westminster (2-2, 2-2) beat Waynesburg (0-4, 0-4). Ty McGowan threw for 135 yards and two touchdowns for Westminster while defensively, Dylan Sleva had 10 tackles and one interception. Samuel Barber threw for 261 yards and a touchdown for Waynesburg.
Division I FCS
Robert Morris 46, Virginia Lynchburg 0 — Anthony Chiccitt threw four touchdown passes in the first half and Robert Morris had little trouble in thumping NCCAA-member Virginia Lynchburg. Chiccitt opened the game with scoring throws of 60 yards to Noah Robinson and 66 yards to Landen Lucas before finishing the first half 11 of 16 for 251 yards. Robinson finished with six receptions for 139 yards for Robert Morris (2-2).
