District college football roundup: Washington & Jefferson opens with shutout of Saint Vincent

Jacob Pugh threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns to lad Washington & Jefferson to a 51-0 season-opening victory over Saint Vincent on Saturday. Bruno Fabrycki had two interceptions for the Presidents (1-0), who outgained Saint Vincent (0-1), 574-139, and had 35 first downs to the Bearcats’ seven.

Carnegie Mellon 31, Geneva 0 – Tre Vasiliadis ran for 72 yards and a score and Joey McGinnis IV had two rushing touchdowns as No. 16 Carnegie Mellon (1-0) blew open a three-point game with four second-half touchdowns. Ben Mills was 19 for 28 for 196 yards with a touchdown and an interception for SMU. Josh Syster had 93 yards on the ground for Geneva (0-1).

Allegheny 39, Waynesburg 36 (OT) — Jack Johnson hit Declan O’Brien with a 19-yard touchdown pass in overtime to give Allegheny (1-0) the win over Waynesburg (0-1). Rico Sastoque earlier kicked a 42-yard field goal during Waynesburg’s overtime possession. Johnson threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns. Samuel Barber tossed for 204 yards and a touchdown for Waynesburg, and Justin Flack ran for 63 yards and three TDs.

Grove City 17, Westminster 7 — Nico Flati ran for 114 yards as Grove City (1-0) defeated Westminster (0-1). Ben Bladel had two sacks for Grove City, which held Westminster to 183 yards. Jalen Royal-Eiland caught six passes for 107 yards for Westminster.

Division II

Slippery Rock 28, Wayne State 17 — Brayden Long threw for 138 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns as No. 15 Slippery Rock (1-0) won its season opener. Khalid Dorsey, Chris D’Or and Isaiah Edwards combined for 197 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for SRU.
