District college football roundup: Wheeling spoils Seton Hill's season opener

Wheeling University broke open a close game in the third quarter and rolled to a 35-24 victory Thursday, spoiling Seton Hill’s season opener.

Ky’Ron Craggette led the Griffins with 14 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jake Cruz was 10 for 34 for 134 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. He ran 11 times for 66 yards and a score.

Javon Davis threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns and Eli Young ran 16 times for 52 yards and two scores for Wheeling.

Cody Rubrecht, a freshman from Greensburg Salem, scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter for the Griffins.

Seton Hill took a 10-7 lead into the half. Cruz scored on a 7-yard run after a Wheeling fumble, and Luke Hauger made a 29-yard field goal.

Wheeling (1-0) took the lead for good when Young scored on a 1-yard run with 3 minutes, 33 seconds left in the third quarter. Seton Hill fumbled on the ensuing possession, and Davis hit Quron Winder for a 26-yard score on a tipped pass to make it 21-10.

Seton Hill put together a drive late in the third and scored on a 1-yard run by Craggette early in the fourth to make it 21-17. Wheeling answered, however, ending a touchdown drive with a 1-yard run by Young to take the momentum back.

IUP 24, Ashland 17 – Karst Hunter hit Quinn Zinobile with a 46-yard touchdown pass with 1:20 to play as No. 17 IUP (1-0) rallied past No. 12 Ashland in a season-opening thriller. IUP tied the score on a 27-yard Nick Andrasi field goal with four minutes to play.

Hunter was 12 for 22 for 222 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, and Cole Laney caught three passes for 106 yards for IUP, which outgained Ashland 366-189. Larry Martin ran 14 times for 57 yards and a TD for Ashland.

Charleston 22, Gannon 13 – Marquan Herron scored on a 49-yard pass from Javonte Howard and Chavon Wright delivered a 9-yard touchdown run with 1:55 to play as Charleston (1-0) scored twice in the final four minutes for a comeback win. Nate Mikell threw for 208 yards and a touchdown for Gannon.

Clarion 30, Lincoln 20 – Will Alexander threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tony Powell and a 20-yard scoring strike to Andy Martin and Brady McKee scored on a fumble recovery to lead Clairion (1-0).

Ferris State 54, Mercyhurst 12 – Carson Gulker and CJ Jefferson each ran for two touchdowns and No. 1 Ferris State outgained Mercyhurst 356-57 on the ground. Adam Urena was 29 for 56 for 304 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Mercyhurst (0-1).
