District college football roundup: W&J knocks off No. 11 John Carroll

Justin Heacock threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns — all to Andrew Wolf — to lead Washington & Jefferson (1-0) to a 21-14 victory over No. 11 John Carroll (0-1) in district college football Saturday. Wolf finished with eight receptions for 172 yards. Jason Floriea threw for 257 yards and a touchdown for John Carroll.

Allegheny 42, Thiel 14 — Jack Johnson threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns as Allegheny (1-0) defeated Thiel (0-1). Shane Cafardi caught eight passes for 103 yards and a touchdown for the Gators, and teammate John Ian Duron rushed for 97 yards and a TD. Thiel’s Alexander Kovalyak threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns, including one for 28 yards to Jake Reddick, who finished with five receptions for 119 yards.

Mount Union 48, Westminster 7 — Josh Petrucelli rushed for four touchdowns, and Braxton Plunk threw for 300 yards and two scores to lead Mount Union (1-0) past Westminster (0-1). Cole Konieczka threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Chevy Dawson for Westminster’s score.

Grove City 39, Juniata 14 — Josh Ehst completed 16 of 28 passes for 323 yards and a touchdown, and Cody Gustafson caught 10 balls for 159 yards and a score to lead Grove City (1-0) past Juniata (0-1). Knoch grad Scott Fraser, in his first college start, caught five passes for 114 yards. Clayton Parrish had 71 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Lake Erie 31, Clarion 26 — Gerald Gardner completed 29 of 43 passes for 365 yards and two scores to power Lake Erie. Jalen Smith scored on a 55-yard punt return and Terrell Ford a 70-yard kick return for Clarion (0-1).

Robert Morris-Dayton, ppd. — The Colonials’ opener was called off because of covid cases within the Robert Morris program.
