District college roundup: Cal (Pa.) fends off Seton Hill upset bid

Noah Mitchell was 15 for 30 for 239 yards and two touchdowns as Cal (Pa.) held on for a 21-14 victory over Seton Hill in PSAC football Saturday night.

JaQuae Jackson had five catches for 138 yards and a score, helping the Vulcans (4-3, 3-1) take a 21-0 lead after three quarters.

Ky-Ron Craggette, who ran for 92 yards for Seton Hill (0-7, 0-4), scored a 4-yard touchdown to make it 21-7 with 10:15 left. Tyler Bradley, who was 10 for 15 for 114 yards, hit Mark Bails with a 21-yard scoring strike with 4:21 left to make it 21-14. A roughing the punter penalty on Seton Hill on the ensuing drive allowed Cal to run out the clock.

Clarion 23, Mercyhurst 21 – Jarrett Esposito’s third field goal of the game, a 30-yarder as time expired, was the game-winner for Clarion (3-4, 2-2) in a PSAC matchup. Khalil Owens had 96 yards rushing and 77 yards receiving for Clarion, including two catches for 52 yards on the final drive. Kareem Hamdan had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown, one of four interceptions and five turnovers forced by the Clarion defense. Cameron Barmore had five catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns for Mercyhurst (2-5, 0-4).

IUP 41, Edinboro 0 Mak Sexton threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns as IUP (6-0, 4-0) amassed 607 yards of offense in its PSAC win at Edinboro (3-4, 1-3). Duane Brown caught seven passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns while Dayjure Stewart rushed for 87 yards and a TD. J.D. Younger added 80 rushing yards for IUP while Anfreenee Williams had 68 rushing yards for Edinboro.

Slippery Rock 40, Gannon 14 In PSAC play, Chris D’Or rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown as No. 18 Slippery Rock (6-1, 3-1) beat Gannon (5-2, 3-2). Noah Grover threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns for Slippery Rock while D.J. Adediwura recorded three sacks as the Rock held Gannon to minus-9 yards rushing. Kory Kurtis threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns for Gannon.

Division III

Carnegie Mellon 12, Washington & Jefferson 7 Logan Young’s 42-yard interception with 7:59 left in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winning score as No. 20 Carnegie Mellon (7-0, 5-0) defeated Washington & Jefferson (5-2, 3-2) in a PAC matchup. Willem Bourma rushed for 126 yards for the Tartans while Cole Hanna booted two field goals. Thomas Coury recorded 11 tackles, a sack and blocked a field goal for Carnegie Mellon, which won its school-record 14th straight game. Ian Hansen caught 11 passes for 95 yards for the Presidents.

Saint Vincent 41, Geneva 25 Brady Walker threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to lead Saint Vincent (2-4, 2-2) to a PAC win over Geneva (1-5, 1-3). D.J. Gray ran for 93 yards for Saint Vincent while teammate Ja’Tier Berkley added 92 rushing yards and a touchdown. Josh Syster ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns for Geneva while Hilton McClain added three receptions for 161 yards.

Waynesburg 34, Bethany 17 – Hunter Cameron ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns, including an 87-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter, to lead Waynesburg (3-3, 2-2) to a PAC victory. Nick Hall ran for 108 yards and Tyler Raines was 10 for 19 for 134 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown to Isaac Trout. Tre-Jour Owens ran for 182 yards and a touchdown for Bethany (1-5, 0-5).

Westminster 41, Thiel 6 – Ryan Gomes ran for 152 yards and two scores and Tyler McGowan was 11 for 17 for 117 yards and three touchdowns as Westminster (3-3, 3-2) picked up a PAC win. Damon Maul caught two passes for 29 yards, and both went for touchdowns. Alexander Anderson caught two balls for 73 yards and a score for Thiel (1-5, 1-3).

Division I FCS

St. Francis 57, Long Island University 7 – Lovell Armstead and QuaSean Holmes each rushed for two touchdowns, accounting for four of six St. Francis (Pa) rushing scores in a victory over winless Long Island University. Armstead led eight rushers with 10 carries and 85 yards, and Holmes gained 61 yards on five rushes.

Cole Doyle was 15 of 22 for 273 yards and one touchdown for St. Francis (4-2, 3-0 Northeast Conference). Doyle connected with Elijah Sarratt from 49 yards out for the receiver’s third straight game with a touchdown. Joe Toepfer led the defense with a fumble recovery and an interception. Alex Schmoke added a 50-yard field goal — the fourth time a St. Francis kicker has converted from 50-plus.

Long Island (0-6, 0-2) was outgained 554-235 and turned it over three times.
