District college roundup: Seton Hill offense struggles in 1st loss of season

Eric Nickel threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns as Kutztown topped previously unbeaten Seton Hill, 14-3, on Saturday.

Logan Wiland paced the Griffins (2-1) with 72 rushing yards.

Luke Hauger accounted for Seton Hill’s only points with a 31-yard field goal at the end of the first half.

Kaden Hastie and Jake Novak caught Nickel’s scoring passes, and Jeremiah Nelson rushed for 77 yards for the Golden Bears (2-1).

Cal (Pa.) 30, Millersville 0 — Cal (Pa.) held Millersville (1-2) to 81 total yards and four first downs in its shutout at home. The Vulcans’ Noah Mitchell threw for 320 yards and a 44-yard touchdown to JaQuae Jackson, who caught nine passes for 99 yards. Anthony Beitko kicked three field goals for Cal (3-0), which amassed 434 yards of offense.

Shippensburg 62, Clarion 33 — Brycen Mussina threw for 350 yards and five touchdowns as Shippensburg (3-0) downed Clarion (0-3). Taylor Eggers threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns for Clarion, and Quinn Zinobile caught five passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Kahliq Muhammad added seven receptions for 102 yards and two TDs in the loss.

East Stroudsburg 17, Mercyhurst 7 — Gunner Anglovich ran for 89 yards and a touchdown to lead East Stroudsburg (2-1) to a nonconference win. Michael Lowery threw for 155 yards and one touchdown for Mercyhurst (1-2).

Shepherd 37, IUP 21 — In a battle of top 15 teams, No. 11 Shepherd (3-0) used a 20-point third quarter to pull away at No. 14 IUP (1-1) for a nonconference victory. Tyson Bagent threw three touchdown passes in the third quarter for Shepherd. He finished with 468 yards passing and four touchdowns. Javon Davis finished with 251 yards passing and two touchdowns for IUP and Charles Irvin had six receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Bloomsburg 31, Gannon 27 — Malik Langley caught a 48-yard Hail Mary from Ben Ries in the end zone as time expired, propelling Bloomsburg (1-2) to a nonconfence victory over Gannon (1-2). The Golden Knights took a 27-23 lead with 8:13 remaining in the fourth quarter when Kory Curtis found Alex Whittaker with a 28-yard touchdown pass and held the lead until the final play. Curtis had 215 yards passing and two touchdowns. Melvin Blanks rushed for 174 yards and a touchdown for Gannon.

West Chester 41, Edinboro 37 — West Chester (2-1) led by 18 points in the second half but had to withstand a late rally by Edinboro (0-2) to earn a nonconference win. Anfreenee Williams scored on a 30-yard run with 3:08 remaining to give the Fighting Scots a 37-34 lead, but Ja’Den McKenzie answered for West Chester with a 1-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds remaining for what proved to be the winning score. Williams had three touchdowns and 73 yards rushing. Edinboro had four turnovers.

Slippery Rock 57, Lock Haven 7 — Andrew Koester had 331 yards passing and three touchdowns as No. 6 Slippery Rock (3-0) torched Lock Haven (1-2) in nonconference play. Henry Litwin had four receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Settle and Kyle Sheets had recieving touchdowns, while Koester, Tim Smith, Chris D’Or, and Chris Moha had rushing touchdowns. The Rock outgained Lock Haven 575 yards to 182.

Division I FCS

St. Francis (Pa.) 39, Wagner 24 — The Red Flash (1-2, 1-0) scored 33 points in the second half to pull away for a win over Wagner (0-3, 0-2) in Northeast Confernece play. Jyron Russell threw for 194 yards and four touchdowns, two of which went to Kaherto Summers. St. Francis trailed 21-13 in the third quarter, but took the lead for good on touchdown connections from Russell to Josh McGrigg and Summers two minutes apart.

Division III

Geneva 42, Saint Vincent 24 — Jaeden Zuzak rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns to lead Geneva (1-2, 1-1) to a PAC win at Saint Vincent (1-1, 1-1). Amos Luptak threw for a touchdown and added 73 rushing yards and another TD for Geneva, which totaled 342 yards on the ground. Brady Walker threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Bearcats.

Grove City 13, Carnegie Mellon 6 — Ryan Fleming recorded 2 1/2 sacks and forced a fumble as Grove City (3-0, 2-0) defeated Carnegie Mellon (1-2, 1-1) in PAC play. Josh Ehst threw for 234 yards and ran for a touchdown while, and Nick Morrow kicked two field goals for Grove City. Ethan Reifer caught six passes for 106 yards for the Tartans, and Kaveh Wojtowich added five receptions for 102 yards, marking only the third time in school history two CMU players broke 100 receiving yards in a game. Ben Mills tossed for 254 yards in the loss, and Hayden Hairston kicked field goals of 30 and 35 yards for the Tartans’ points.

Waynesburg 52, Thiel 14 — Monroe Mohler returned the second half kick off 89 yards for a touchdown and Waynesburg (1-2, 1-1) went on to score 35 points in the half to run away from Thiel (0-3, 0-2) and earn its first PAC win of the season. Ryan Haines was 17 for 21 passing for 325 yards and four touchdowns, including a 98 yarder to Dakota Romantino. Justin Flack rushed for 184 yards and two scores.Deon Logan had 116 yards rushing for Thiel.

Wabash 36, Allegheny 28 — Jack Johnson connected on 43 of a school-record 73 passing attempts for 368 yards and two touchdowns, but Allegheny (1-2, 0-2) fell at Wabash (3-0, 2-0) in NCAC play. Allegheny tied the game 20-20 in the third quarter after Johnson found Vaun Ross with 16 yard touchdown pass, but Wabash blocked the extra point and Sean Sinovic returned it 99 yards for two points. Wabash never trailed again. Ross finished with a school-record 14 receptions for 109 yards.

Washington & Jefferson 28, Bethany 3 — Justin Huss, EJ Thompson and Joey Koroly had rushing touchdowns for No. 12 Washington & Jefferson (3-0, 2-0) in a win over Bethany (0-3, 0-2) in PAC play. Justin Heacock passed for 164 yards and connected with Cameron O’Brien on a 29 yard touchdown. The Presidents’ defense forced three turnovers and held the Bison to 14 yards rushing.

Westminster 34, Case Western 12 — Westminster intercepted five passes, including one that was returned 100 yards for a touchdown by Brice Butler, in a victory over Case Western (2-1, 1-1). Cole Konieczka went 13 for 24 for 208 yards and two touchdowns for Westminster (1-1, 1-0). Jalen Washington caught five passes for 102 yards. Frank Antuono scored a pair of rushing touchdowns.
