District soccer notebook: Pitt’s Sarah Schupansky signs with NWSL’s Gotham

Sarah Schupansky is extending her soccer career as she turns professional.

The former standout at North Allegheny and Pitt signed a multi-year contract to play for the NJ/NY Gotham of the National Women’s Soccer League.

The deal is through 2026 with a team option for ’27.

“I could not be more honored or excited to be joining such an amazing club,” Schupansky said in a news release. “It is going to be one special year and I cannot wait to get started.”

A team captain as a senior at Pitt this fall, Schupansky led the NCAA in assists with 15.

Last season , she became the first player in Panthers’ history to be named to the All-ACC First Team after she had 11 goals and 14 assists.

Schupansky finished her college career with 32 goals and 43 assists in 82 games.

“Sarah is an extremely talented player who is ready to take the next step into the professional game,” Gotham FC General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West said. “She is a versatile player who can play as a midfielder or as a winger. We look forward to having Sarah join the club.”

The new Pittsburgh Riveters women’s pro team announced the signing of another local product in Fox Chapel graduate Kate Friday.

A freshman midfielder at Xavier, Friday is a former Riverhounds Development Academy player.

“We are delighted to welcome Kate back to the club. She is a player that has had to work hard through her developmental years in the RDA, and she is now flourishing,” Riveters coach Scott Gibson said in a news release. “She played exceptionally well at the Invitational Combine, and she has all the characteristics both on and off the field that will help our culture and locker room.”

Friday played for the Hounds’ 2005 Elite Clubs National League team for eight years.

She is the seventh player confirmed for the Riveters’ debut season in the pre-professional USL W League.

Hounds re-sign Osumanu

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are bringing back Illal Osumanu, signing the defender to a two-year contract.

His deal includes a team option for 2027.

Osumanu, a 28-year-old from Accra, Ghana, played more than 2,500 minutes last regular season, while starting 29 of 34 games.

He played collegiately at Charleston and Marshall.
