Pittsburgh Steelers’ Carlos Davis (No. 73) celebrates with teammates after a T.J. Watt sack during a win against the Dallas Cowboys last season. Davis was cleared to practice Thursday but remains on injured reserve.

A Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman on the injured reserve list was cleared to practice Thursday. But not the high-profile one that some are probably hoping for.

Carlos Davis returned to practice Thursday, opening up a 21-day window in which he must be activated to the Steelers active roster or be lost for the season. Davis, a seventh-round pick last year, has not played since the season opener at the Buffalo Bills. Davis played 17 snaps that day — fourth-most among defensive linemen — but has rarely been able to practice since because of a knee injury

Davis was placed on IR on Oct. 27. He has served the minimum three weeks on the list.

The Steelers have played virtually the entire season without three of their top five defensive linemen entering the season. In addition to Davis, veteran starters Stephon Tuitt and Tyson Alualu remain on IR. Alualu is out for the season after suffering an ankle injury during Week 2.

Tuitt began the season on IR after not participating in team drills at all during camp, reportedly because of a knee injury.

Davis, whose twin brother Khalil was signed to the Steelers practice squad earlier this month, had one assisted tackled in the win against the Bills. Carlos Davis had six tackles in playing 54 snaps over seven games as a rookie last season.

At 320 pounds, Davis is capable of playing nose tackle.
