Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot continued to use the NCAA transfer portal in an attempt to restock his roster, getting a verbal commitment Wednesday from former Mercer (Ga.) University player Leon Ayers III

Since the end of the season, Duquesne has received non-binding commitments from transfers Tre Williams of Indiana State, R.J. Gunn of Lenoir-Rhyne and Pedro Castro of Houston Baptist. Prep school point guard Primo Spears also has committed verbally.

Ayers (6-foot-6, 180 pounds) played at Henry Ford (Mich.) College during the 2019-20 season when he was named a junior college All-American. He averaged 21.7 points and 8.9 rebounds.

At Mercer this season, he averaged 12.2 points while shooting 39% from 3-point range. He also averaged 3.8 rebounds per game.

Dambrot has lost senior front-court players Michael Hughes and Marcus Weathers from the 2020-21 team, but guard Tavian Dunn-Martin has decided to return for his bonus season of eligibility.
