Duquesne secures commitments from former VCU guard, Slovakian forward

Keith Dambrot took the first major steps in rebuilding Duquesne’s men’s basketball team, securing commitments from two players Monday.

Tre Clark, who played two years in the Atlantic 10 at VCU before spending last season at Northwest Florida State College, and 6-foot-8 forward Matus Hronsky of Slovakia verbally committed to the Dukes. Hronsky played last season at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah.

Clark, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard, helped Northwest Florida win the NJCAA championship this season with a 31-5 record. He averaged 12.3 points, 3.4 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game. He also displayed an ability to hit the long-range shot, hitting 61 of 166 (36.7%) from beyond the 3-point arc.

Clark, a native of Covington, Ga., was a reserve guard at VCU during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. He shot 50% from the field (36 of 72) in 2020-21 and averaged 5.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. He scored at a 2.1 points-per-game pace in 2019-20.

Duquesne finished last season with a 6-24 record, losing 16 of 17 games in the Atlantic 10. Since the end of the season, guards Jackie Johnson III, Tyson Acuff and Toby Okani have announced their intentions to transfer.

Johnson said he plans to transfer to UNLV.

The Dukes also could lose their leading rebounder after Kevin Easley Jr. declared for the NBA Draft, with an option to return to school. Easley will maintain his eligibility while getting feedback from NBA sources on his 2022 draft status.

Easley, who previously played at TCU and Chattanooga, averaged 6.6 rebounds per game last season while scoring at a 10.7-point pace, which was third on the team.
