Duquesne football will venture into the ACC in 2022, but it must travel almost 900 miles to make it happen.

Duquesne coach Jerry Schmitt announced Tuesday that the Dukes will play Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla., on Aug. 27, 2022.

It will be the first meeting between the three-time national champion Seminoles and the Dukes.

But it’s far from the first time Duquesne, an FCS team in football since 1992, has faced an FBS opponent in a so-called “buy” game. Typically, when an FBS school invites an FCS team for a game at its stadium, the visitor is rewarded with a payout often reaching or surpassing $1 million to cover travel expenses and bolster its bottom line.

Duquesne also has played at Buffalo (2014), UMass (2018) and Hawaii (2018). The Dukes lost those games by scores of 63-15 (UMass), 38-28 (Buffalo) and 42-21 (Hawaii).

Duquesne will open the 2021 fall season at TCU on Sept. 4 and Ohio on Sept. 11. In addition, after the Florida State game, Duquesne will make a return trip to Hawaii on Sept. 17, 2022.

Meanwhile, the Dukes are preparing to begin the 2021 spring season March 7 against Sacred Heart at Arthur J. Rooney Field. The fall season was postponed because of the covid-19 pandemic.
