Marcus Weathers, who led Duquesne in scoring the past two seasons, has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal and will use his bonus year of eligibility at another school.
Weathers could have returned to Duquesne next season, thanks to the NCAA’s ruling that 2020-21 doesn’t count against a player’s eligibility because of the covid-19 pandemic. At the end of the season, Weathers said “there’s definitely a possibility” he might return to Duquesne.
Ultimately, he decided to end his three-year Duquesne career and play his final season elsewhere. He is joined in the transfer portal by his twin brother Michael Weathers, who played at Texas Southern. The Weathers brothers previously played together at Miami (Ohio).
Weathers, who transferred to Duquesne in 2018, averaged 15.3 and 14.3 points the past two seasons. He also led the Dukes in rebounding as a junior in 2019-20 (8.1) and was second in rebounding this season (7.5) to senior Michael Hughes, who decided to turn pro.
Meanwhile, Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot had been preparing for the possibility of losing Weathers and Hughes, the team’s most imposing players in the paint. Dambrot has received verbal commitments from two 6-foot-7 transfers, Tre Williams, formerly of Indiana State, and R.J. Gunn, who played last season at Lenoir-Rhyne.
