Junior forward Marcus Weathers became the first Duquesne player in nine years named to an All-Atlantic 10 first or second team when he was selected Tuesday to the conference’s second team.

The most recent Dukes player so honored was Damian Saunders in 2011.

It’s an especially prestigious honor for Weathers — voting was done by the A-10 coaches.

Entering the conference tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Weathers leads Duquesne in scoring average (14.3 points per game) and rebounding (8.1). He also leads the team in double-digit scoring games (21), 20-point games (five), double-digit rebound games (eight) and double-doubles (five).

He has scored a team-high 1,048 career points.

Weathers is the fifth player to earn conference honors while playing for coach Keith Dambrot the past three seasons. Tarin Smith (2018) and Tavian Dunn-Martin (2019) were named Sixth Man of the Year. Eric Williams Jr., who transferred to Oregon last year, and Sincere Carry were All-Rookie team selections in 2018 and ‘19.

The Dukes are the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will meet the George Washington/Fordham winner at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Dayton sophomore forward Obi Toppin was named A-10 player of the year and the Flyers’ Anthony Grant is coach of the year.

Richmond junior guard Jacob Gilyard, who recorded six steals last Friday in a victory against Duquesne, was named defensive player of the year.

Tre Mitchell of Massachusetts, who transferred from Elizabeth Forward to Woodstock (Conn.) Academy in 2017, was named rookie of the year while earning a spot on the second team with Weathers.
