Edward Kizza caps 10-round shootout with game-winner as Riverhounds advance to conference semifinals

Edward Kizza scored in regulation, then in overtime and finally in a penalty kick shootout to give the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC a victory over Birmingham Legion FC in the first round of the USL Championship Eastern Conference playoffs Sunday night at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.

The final score was 2-2 with Pittsburgh holding an 8-7 edge in penalty kicks.

The No. 5-seeded Riverhounds advanced to the conference semifinals where they will play at top-seeded Louisville City FC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Birmingham took a 1-0 lead in the 72nd minute when Prosper Kasim scored on a header off a free kick from 40 yards.

Kizza came off the bench late in regulation and scored the equalizer in stoppage time, getting a header just outside the goal box.

Birmingham’s Bruno Lapa scored early in the 30-minute overtime period for a 2-1 lead.

Kizza again got the equalizer, finishing a pass into the box by William Eyang in the 116th minute.

The teams then went to penalty kicks, and Kizza scored the winning tally in the 10th round.

Toby Sims, Danny Griffin, Albert Dikwa, Marc Ybarra, Arturo Ordonez, Angelo Kelly and Jelani Peters also scored in the 10-round shootout.

Jahmali Waite made three stops in the shootout, in addition to seven saves during regulation and overtime, to secure the victory for the Hounds.
