Ex-Penguins assistant coaches Ty Hennes, David Quinn join Rangers

Assistant coaches Ty Hennes and David Quinn have left the Pittsburgh Penguins for identical roles with the New York Rangers.

The Rangers announced the appointments Thursday.

Hennes and Quinn will reunite with former Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan, who left the Penguins on April 28 and took over the Rangers on May 2.

Quinn departs after a single season with the Penguins. A friend and former teammate of Sullivan dating to their days as players at Boston University in the 1980s, Quinn was installed as an assistant coach with the Penguins on June 12, 2024.

Overseeing the defensemen and the power play, Quinn boosted the latter considerably. After struggling for several seasons, the Penguins’ power play finished sixth in the NHL this past regular season with a conversion rate of 25.8%.

As for the defensemen, that group struggled throughout the season as the team surrendered an average of 30.1 shots per game, fourth most in the NHL.

Quinn previously served as head coach of the Rangers for three seasons between 2018 and 2021.

Hennes had been with the Penguins since 2018 when he was hired as a skating and skills coach. Promoted to assistant coach in November 2022, Hennes worked extensively with players trying to recover from injuries.

On Monday, former Penguins assistant coach Mike Vellucci left the organization to take an identical role with the Chicago Blackhawks. In May, former assistant video coach C.J. D’Alimonte left the Penguins to pursue other opportunities.

Of the incumbent members of the Penguins’ coaching staff, only goaltending coach Andy Chiodo and video coach Madison Nikkel remain.

On Wednesday, the Penguins announced Dan Muse, previously an assistant coach with the Rangers, would replace Sullivan as head coach.
