Ex-Penguins minor leaguer Andreas Martinsen joins Swiss team
Former Penguins minor league forward Andreas Martinsen has joined EV Zug of Switzerland’s NLA league according to a release from the team.
Martinsen, 29, was on a one-year two-way contract with the Penguins until he was placed on unconditional waivers on Friday and had his contract terminated by the team.
In 24 AHL games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, Martinsen had three points (one goal, two assists).
The Penguins acquired Martinsen on Oct. 25 along with a 2021 seventh-round draft pick from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenseman Erik Gudbranson. From the Penguins’ perspective, that transaction was geared primarily towards shedding Gudbranson’s $4 million salary cap hit off the books. In reality, Martinsen, a native of Norway, was a spare NHL contract the Ducks had to jettison in order to consecrate the deal.
With Martinsen having departed, the Penguins now have 48 NHL contracts, two short of the NHL’s limit of 50, according to Cap Friendly.
