Ex-Steelers running back Najee Harris suffers minor eye injury in fireworks accident, agent says
Former Steelers running back Najee Harris suffered an eye injury in a fireworks accident at a Fourth of July event but is expected to make a full recovery by the start of the NFL season, his agent said in a statement released Thursday.
According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, the incident happened at an apartment complex in Antioch, Calif. Six men and a 13-year-old boy were injured and the man who lit the fireworks was in critical condition after losing several fingers and suffering injuries to his face and chest.
The Antioch police department confirmed that an incident took place but did not name any of the parties involved and said an investigation is ongoing.
Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, said the running back suffered a “superficial eye injury.”
Harris, 27, was born in Northern California and went to high school in Antioch. He signed a one-year, $9.5 million contract with the San Diego Chargers after playing the first four years of his career with the Steelers.
Harris is sixth on the Steelers’ all-time rushing list with 4,312 yards and 28 touchdowns.
