Familiar faces force Riverhounds to settle for draw at Monterey Bay
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds had to settle for a frustrating 2-2 draw on the road against Monterey Bay FC on Friday night, and a pair of familiar faces were the biggest sources of frustration.
Former Pittsburgh players Christian Volesky and Alex Dixon erased both leads the Riverhounds took, with Volesky scoring the tying goal for Monterey Bay (3-2-4) a few seconds into stoppage time.
Albert Dikwa scored both goals for the Riverhounds (2-2-5).
“We did good things on the ball. Got two goals, we had the lead twice,” Riverhounds coach Bob Lilley said. “Disappointing. We all have to do a better job closing the game out. Unfortunately, right now, we’re in a bit of funk with that, giving up points from a winning position.”
The Riverhounds took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Kenardo Forbes led a break up the middle of the pitch and laid a pass off to his right to Dikwa, who beat charging goalkeeper Antony Siaha.
Monterey Bay tied the score when Dixon took a pass from Volesky in the box and buried it in the 44th minute.
The Riverhounds retook the lead when Arturo Ordonez got a head on a corner, and Dikwa found the loose ball and scored in the 74th minute.
Monterey Bay tied the score one last time when Volesky slid into the box and redirected in an Adrian Rebollar cross in the 91st minute.
Dikwa had a chance for a hat trick, but his penalty kick was stopped by Siaha in the 56th minute.
The Riverhounds’ next game is against an MLS opponent in the U.S. Open Cup. They will visit the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gillette Stadium.
