In a photo taken in December 2020, a sign alerting fans that face masks are required hangs above gates at Heinz Field as police officers stand by. Saturday is the Steelers’ home preseason opener, and the team announced that fans will be required to bring masks and wear them in any indoor areas.

The facemasks on players’ helmets won’t be the only masks that will be required when the Pittsburgh Steelers host a preseason game at Heinz Field this weekend.

Fans will be required to bring masks for the 7:30 p.m. game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, the Steelers announced Monday. Although masks will not be required to be worn in any of the concourse or seating areas (including club/suite areas that have open windows), they will be required in any indoor areas of the stadium.

“This includes indoor club levels, Steelers Pro Shops, restrooms, elevators and other enclosed spaces,” read a statement from Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten. “Fans are to bring their own masks with them prior to entering the stadium.”

The Steelers will not ask for proof of vaccination but are asking those who are unvaccinated for covid-19 to wear a mask at all times, in accordance to Centers for Disease Control guidelines.

Saturday’s game will be the first Steelers event at home with full capacity allowed in more than 20 months.
