Fantasy Sports podcast: QB draft strategy. Sliding RBs atop the board. 'Stacking' debates.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this column. This will be my last post.
I mean, after drafting two absolutely perfect fantasy football teams on back-to-back nights, I am already counting my winnings as I fully expect to roll through my leagues undefeated.
I will no doubt win dozens — if not hundreds — of dollars and then it’s off to blissful retirement as I buy Terry Bradshaw’s condo in Hawaii.
Or I’ll just finish in the bottom half of both divisions like I did last year.
That wasn’t Jeff Erickson’s fault. He gave me great advice. I just should’ve listened more carefully. So if you haven’t had a draft yet for your league, listen to what Jeff has to say in this week’s podcast from his RotoWire bunker.
When it comes to quarterbacks, Jeff adopts what he calls the “last to be first, first to be second mentality.” That means, wait to draft your starting quarterback. But then be quick to draft his backup. He explains why.
We also get into an interesting discussion about “stacking.” For instance, I was kicking myself because in one keeper league I retained Patrick Mahomes as my quarterback. I took Titans running back Derrick Henry in Round 1. And when Round 2 snaked back up, I could’ve drafted Travis Kelce to double-up on totals. But I took DeAndre Hopkins instead.
A mistake? Maybe. But Jeff says don’t overthink those situations when they come up on your board. And he explains why I shouldn’t be beating myself up about it. Well, not too much, anyway.
We also kick around a few slipping running backs. Some people are getting scared away from the likes of Joe Mixon, Dalvin Cook and Melvin Gordon. Jeff explains the reasons why.
He also points out an interesting ripple effect that is taking place as a result. You’d think that slide may boost the draft positioning of receivers such as Hopkins, Michael Thomas and Davante Adams.
No, actually it’s the opposite, Erickson says. He gives us the reasoning.
We also touch on some kicker, defense and quarterback pivot points. How fantasy leagues are adjusting to the walkouts in all sports. And baseball fantasy owners basking in the totals of Pirates opponents.
