Wednesday’s “First Call” shows us that former Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is still in top form as he prepares to join the Chicago Blackhawks. The Paul brothers are trying to suck Cleveland Browns helmet-swinger Myles Garrett into a celebrity boxing match. A potential rookie standout sees his first season end before it even begins. And the New York Yankees’ latest victim is a former Pirates pitcher.

Flash the leather

Now that Marc-Andre Fleury has had some time to let his trade to Chicago sink in, it appears he is getting ready for life as a Blackhawk.

And if this viral clip is any indication, the former Penguins and Vegas Golden Knights goalie is ready to pick up where he left off after a Vezina Trophy campaign.

Watch the video until the end. Take a look at the save The Flower makes with his glove in this pickup game/scramble drill.

For as much as it looks like Fleury is ready to get going with the Blackhawks, it’s obvious he is missing something.

Team gear!

It appears Fleury is still using his Golden Knights mask. And, unless my eyes deceive me, that’s a Penguins jersey turned inside out, isn’t it?

Etienne out

What lousy news out of Jacksonville.

Rookie Travis Etienne is out for the season. The running back out of Clemson suffered what is believed to be a Lisfranc foot injury during a 23-21 preseason loss to the New Orleans Saints Monday night. He is slated to undergo surgery.

A subplot to the 2021 NFL campaign was going to be which rookie running back would have the better season, Etienne or Steelers first-round draft choice, Najee Harris.

Harris was drafted out of Alabama at pick No. 24, one slot ahead of Etienne. Now that storyline has been rendered moot.

Last year’s rookie surprise James Robinson will likely shoulder the load once again in Jacksonville as a result. Carlos Hyde will help out as well.

But neither profiles as a pass-catcher out of the backfield the same way Etienne was supposed to help fellow former Clemson Tiger rookie Trevor Lawrence.

It’s come to this

This is how far my relationship with mankind has sunk.

I’m finding myself in a position where I may actually have to root for Logan Paul in a boxing match.

In an interview with Complex.com, Myles Garrett said he’s not interested in celebrity boxing. But the defensive lineman insisted that he would “beat the brakes” off of Paul if given the chance.

Logan’s brother, Jake — the other half of the YouTube-born celebrity boxing empire — is a Browns fan. But he didn’t take too kindly to Garrett’s bravado.

“Stick to football, my friend,” Jake Paul said to Garrett during an appearance with WKYC Cleveland’s Stephanie Haney. “Long story short, my brother would knock him out. No question.”

Garrett is 6-foot-4, 272 pounds. Logan Paul is 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. So they aren’t exactly in the same weight class. But Jake claims his brother knocked out all of the NFL’s Gronkowski brothers in the same sparring session once. So he’s not worried about Logan’s chances against Garrett.

Well, unless Garrett swings a helmet at him, I suppose.

Chalk-up Charlie

The New York Yankees won again. Make it 11 in a row for the Bronx Bombers, their longest win streak since 1985.

They completed a quick two-game sweep of the Braves with a 5-4 win in Atlanta Tuesday night.

The latest victim on the mound was former Pirates pitcher Charlie Morton. Even though Morton had nine strikeouts against no walks, the Yanks kicked him around for four earned runs on six hits in five innings.

D.J. LeMahieu’s two-run homer in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie.

Another former Pirate, Clay Holmes, got the victory to improve to 5-2. The Yankees remain four games back of Tampa Bay in the American League East, though, because the Rays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 Tuesday.

The Yankees also sit atop the wild card standings, 2.5 games in front of the second-place Boston Red Sox and 4.5 in front of the Oakland A’s.

As for the Braves, they are 4.5 games in front of the Phillies atop the National League East.
